paypal transaction was created by Nebr_Rex
I'm selling a bike on Craig's list. This morning I received a text. Interested party
wants to pay by PayPal. Say they are from Croatia. Phone number is New York.
645 area code. Then they will send a shipping agent to pick it up after the
transfer of funds. I have no experience in this situation. Has anyone have experience
in something like this?

Scam.
When you sell on CL, make sure you put in the ad CASH in Hand and a Valid Motorcycle License for looking/ test riding your bike.
CL has quite a bit of info on these scams. But you still have to beware yourself.

Do you have a Paypal account? If you do, then you will get a notification of payment received from Paypal,it will state, when, and how much money was deposited, and by whom, if you do not have an account, you can either open one, send the interested party an invoice for the amount of the bike, and do the transaction after the funds are deposited in your account or you can sell localy cash only. Do not accept a Paypal payment without having a Paypal account.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

I would not use PayPal for a transaction between individuals. There are too many scams & pp has too much power to act unilaterally. When there is a problem, good luck getting the issue resolved & in a timely manner. If you use PP to accept money, you should only maintain a minimum balance in the account, as paypal can freeze the account for at least 6 mos on their whim. If I was to ever start accepting pp payments, I would open a new account in a different bank & have it completely separate from my other accounts.

Not related to pp, but I know someone who accepted a cc payment for a major repair at his car repair business, and even though he called the cc co. to verify the account & they approved the payment, 2 weeks later the payment was revoked & the guy somehow cleaned out his bank account of $10,000. I think the bank account was linked to the cc payment transaction co via direct deposit to the retailer. The guy was a foreigner, I think Nigerian.

The problem as I see it is that you will have no evidence that the buyer, who claims to be in Croatia, ever actually received the bike. He may claim he did not know the person who came and picked it up. If the buyer then asks PayPal for a cheerful refund they will give it to him unless you can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he actually took possession of the bike, and I do not see how you would ever be able to prove that. If he is a serious buyer tell him to send his agent money via PayPal and the agent can hand you cash when he picks up the bike. Ed

+1! scam! Get cash on the barrelhead/local pickup, or the bike goes NOWHERE!Scammers are coming outta the woodwork on the "interweb"! Croation Crook! I was trying to sell a 60's vintage dinette set on CL...asshole wanted me to deposit his check (with shipping payment included in it above and beyond the purchase price,) and pay the trucker when he showed up to pick it up! (They get the merchandise, then 3 weeks later, you get a nasty surprise in your checking account!)I told him to, well, decorum prevents me from relating EXACTLY what I told him, but it boiled down to "No".!Another FYI....most scammers have an aversion to "mouth words" (meaning that they prefer to communicate via texts)...won't make/awnser a phone call? Definite Red flag! Let the seller beware as well! Let's be safe out there!

Get them to send the Paypal payment as a gift/personal.
Gift/personal transactions are not bound by Paypals buyer protection so there is no way for the buyer to get their money back after the sale and your money will be safe.
If the buyer refuses then walk away.
