It's different, that's what it is. Your idea will probably differ from mine. The perfect engine for X will be one that delivers 130 mpg and is easy to maintain, speed having little interest. The perfect engine for Y delivers 500 hp and easy wheelies at 200 mph, economy be darned.

The perfect engine for me has instant throttle response from idle, is flexible and offer instant go the moment I open the throttle without having to change down a gear or more to get power. No dull throttle respones, no point in the rev range when power comes in, no fuzziness. All this while feeling relaxed on the road; low rpm and not too many cylinders. A big twin with stomp-pulling torque fitted into a standard machine with reasonable weight. A W 650, only with 1500 cc and 80 hp. And carbs. Nothing digital whatsoever on the bike save for the ignition.

What's your definition of the perfect engine?

the perfect engine for me is-quick throttle response good midrange torque with decent upper end power, and sounds like a formula 1 car.. over all power is not important just has to feel the part when going down the road

Direct Fuel Injection Turbo - my 09 GTI had an amazing torque spread for a 2.0L engine. Just wanted it to be bigger, bigger turbo, and all wheel drive.

Built with just enough oomph to give a comparable size crotch rocket a run for its money (not necessarily beat it) but pulls all through the RPM ranges. Oh and sounds like a pissed off heard of Bees.

KZ700 go figure

RS 34s
720 wiseco kit
cavanah heads
550 6 speed back cut
ape extra clutch disc kit
kerker black
ape block off plates

I would just want a crisp feel nice and tight when I pull or let off the throttle I want it to respond. No down shifting to find power just twist the grip and hold on. I would want it to be capeable of idol for days !!!

Mabe I should just find a good tuner to help me line mine out its close to perfection just seem to be a little off no matter what I do.

The ideal, and probably unrealistic engine for me:
A compact, lightweight 650cc engine with Vtec that creates very little vibration. CAM 1 would provide good torque like a weeStrom or Versys, while providing mpgs like those bikes. Cam 2 would kick in at 6,500 RPM and provide a high RPM kick like my old 2007 FZ6. Most importantly, the 6th gear would be an overdrive gear. I don't mind downshifting.

Most importantly, and here's the rub, it must be easy for me to work on.

Yeah, basically. I just wish it didn't look like an ugly Busa. And that's saying something...

I'll say ZX14R too. I think the bike looks great. I don't like sports bikes basically, but this one is tits. You see Ricky Gadson run 9.08@155 on a stock bike with gearing and suspension mods at Atco, NJ a couple weeks ago? It took tons of work to run Prostock times of these numbers on a KZ1000 back in the day. 125mph in the 1/8 mile. Faster speed in the 1/8 than even the fastest Kawasaki KZ based GPZ1100 ran in the 1/4 mile!

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
