Buying a 1979 KZ750, what should I look for? was created by Topper
There's a 1979 KZ750 for sale about two hours from me. The price is pretty attractive and the pics of the bike look really good.
I don't know much about the history of the bike yet. If I decide to go for it, I'm just going to get one shot to look at the bike as it is too far to make more than one trip.
So my question for this group is, what should I look out for on this bike? Also are there specific questions I should ask the seller before deciding to go see it?
I'm new to motorcycling and old bikes, so don't assume I know anything (I don't).
I've got a little KZ305 that I like a lot but need a little more power and this looks like just the ticket.
Here's a pic from the seller.

Topper, except for the pipes and grips, stock. Looks to be in great shape.
They are not speed demons, but do have loads of touque and are a fun ride.
Ask the owner if he has ever checked the starter clutch for loose bolts.
A good time to check is when doing an oil change as half the component removal is already done.
Oil filter change requires removal of the shift lever, left foot peg and sprocket cover to access the filter cap
Clutch has a lockout switch to keep the electric starter from functioning unless the clutch lever in pulled.
For starting, choke on (choke lever up) no throttle.
Headlight is on with igniton. Good battery for using the electric start a must.
Good Luck,
Jim

Thanks Jim. This bike looks like it has rear disc brakes. Was that stock?

You guys are making me want this bike even more. When it comes to music gear (I'm a bass player) we have what's called GAS pains (Gear Aquisition Syndrome). I don't know what the motorcycle equivalent is (MAS?) but I'm having it.
You mentioned a bent front end and the starter clutch, I know to look for rust in the tank, other than a test ride, what should I look out for to make sure I'm not inheriting someone elses headache?
