I notice that the pics of some of these monsters show that they used spoked rear wheels (rather than cast). Lighter, I guess, but I'm surprised that with that combination of power and traction they didn't tear the spokes loose when they dropped the clutch.

Yes I believe this was the only Z style Pro stocker the team of V&H ever ran and that was for RC Eng Later when they formed their own business they raced Zuks, in those days, except for the GPZ Grey bike pictured for 1 year. My friends and sponsors from Louisville (M&M Racing) bought and raced the grey bike in Prostock for several years.

I never remember Vance/Hines running a Z1 and would like to see pictures too. I remember reading how Hines ran an old CB750 way back when, but memory about when they raced as a team before 1978 is gone in my memory. Anything like Bob Carpenters bike it would be great to see for sure. The first Vance/Hines prostock I remember was the GS1000 they set the record at 9.40 or so then lowered it to 9.00 that year. I think that was 1978 when the GS1000 was released. Back then the rulebook said stock frame was required. Of course swingarm was aftermarket and the frame could be braced ect. I remember when Terry Vance said a guy could take a streetbike like a GS1000 or Z1 and it would take about $5000 to be a top half of the ladder prostock entry. I guess $5000 in 1978 was a bit of money, but not the money pit required to race today.

i would believe that...i had a stock 79 gs1000 w/13k on the clock and that thing would lift the front wheel easily on a redline 1-2...my first streetbike....you throw 5k at a bike like that and you have a contender....like you said though, 5k back then for mods was a lot of cash..hell, how much was a 79 gs1000 off the floor? 3k?.....

Back then pro-stockers were using a 3.5" wide rear rim! Had to use the clutch instead of just letting it fly. Had to have a good rider as well as hp to win then. Not like the bikes nowadays. I think this Z1 was using a 5" slick on a solid wheel. After awhile they used wheels by Kosman, etc. where they would cut up two wheels to make one. At first they just widened it on the brake side and then they did both sides. The one piece wheels came later. I THINK the magazine was called Streetbike. Mostly harleys but they usually had a little about metric bikes near the back. I remember watching Mike Bruso run the first 9 sec. time on a Z1 for the record. Think it was in Edgewater Raceway Park near Cincinnati. 1170cc, about .400 lift cams, ported head, 3.5" rear rim with 7" roadrace tire and maybe an inch or two longer swingarm...no wheelie bars, no air shifter, etc. These guys could ride the hell out of those bikes. I also have pictures of their GS1000 pro-stocker.

I'm the same way, drag racing was all I lived for in motorcycle competition back in the 70s and early 80s. Now motorcycles run so great it makes our old Kawasakis look like nothing. I was looking at the AMA dragbike stuff and there are regular streetbikes that run 8 seconds and 170-180mph on street tires and no wheelie bar, non turbo streetbikes. Then they have the extended swingarm prostreets that run up to 200mph. Too bad they have to be so dang ugly which ruins it, but still pretty interesting stuff. What would happen if we had a cool prostock like Bob Carpenters old bike and put a modern Prostock engine in it? That would be something to see. I wonder what it would run vs. running in these new plastic tupperware things we see now competing.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Now their painted so nice, and all look, so much the same.
There is no more weekend racer. The guy with the taped up seat, crappie paint job, borrowed tires. That guy can bearly afford a ticket to the races now days. Bob, Sid, Terry, Mike, what would these guys be like, on one of these new bikes?
