My 1980 KZ750H1 LTD, with V&H header and pods, has been getting 35mpg .... BUT .... I just had the carbs sync'd and tuned ... and everything checked on a dyno .... so we'll see if I made an improvement.

BTW ... the old girl made 55 horsepower at the rear tire. And the pull was very smooth and even across the chart. The tech seemed impressed ??? Is this horsepower rating about right ? Owners manual says 74 horsepower ????

With good ring and valve seal, and everything else right, I'd expect to see around 59-60 hp on a real dyno (not a DynoJet).

Drivetrain losses seem to run around 20%, so 14.8 hp on your 74 hp 750, and that would put you at 59-60 hp.

Was the hp corrected for altitude?

Steel , I dunno ???? What I do know is that my ol' 750 is a rocket !!! It is very fast ... sooo .... once more ... I dunno what the exact parameters were set to at the dyno.

If the dyno horsepower rating is, indeed, low ... as in below expectations .... well I just don't care .... lol.

She's plenty fast enough for me !!!! And she runs good and smooth once warmed up. Albiet, she's cold blooded as hec !

There you go! :)

Dyno numbers (especially from the inertia dynos) are for bench racing, all that matters is if you are happy with it.

From a guy that rides a 750 twin rated at 54 hp at the crank by Kawasaki :D

But it's fast enough to be my daily rider, and fast enough to get my license suspended, if I was so inclined :D

And it's lot's faster than my pickup truck, while getting 84 mpg vs 12 mpg, at $3.95 per gallon that's pretty important to me.

Dale, with Ohio being reasonably close to sea level AND your bike being a 1980 model, the cold bloodedness doesn't surprise me. 1980 was the watershed year for most Japanese bike manufacturers when the EPA stepped on their cojones and made them lean the fuelling out considerably. Low altitude and leaner carbs make for slow cranky warmups on most 1980 and later carburated bikes. Short of changing the pilot jets, you'll just have to live with things as they are.

Keep in mind that I was operating in economy mode the entire time, minimum throttle and shifting at 3k rpm, and 45/60 mph cruise, 60 on highway and 45 on County roads, and I spend more time on County roads.

And there's also the notoriously inaccurate speedometer/odometer to consider. My normal spirited riding style nets me 55-60 mpg on the 750 twin, I only started riding for economy when gas hit almost $4.00 per gallon.

Just figured my mileage out from yesterdays 300 km ride.
I got 5.25 litres/100 km = 44.80 mpg.
This was on the return trip, mostly highway riding.

I earlier posted that a mix of Interstate and secondary I got about 48mpg. I haven't remembered to recheck until Saturday. I filled the tank and went for an 87mi ride and refilled 1.266 gal when I got back. Mostly 40-50mph, up to 60, country secondary rds. If my calculator is correct that's almost 69mpg :woohoo:

I get about 140 before hitting reserve, the math says 37.5 mpg but that is a combination of city and highway riding. I'm also not very easy on the throttle, if I was I'm sure on the freeway I should be close to 50?

Those 40-50 mph cruises on secondary rodes really boost the mileage don't they. :)

My motor is an 82 750 twin with 79 carbs, and I just did the valves, synched the carbs, adjusted the carbs, new plugs, Accel coil, electronic ignition, K&N stock replacement air filter, fresh oil change, stock 80 two into two exhaust, new chain and sprockets, wheel alignment, and 32 psi front, 30 psi rear on the tire pressures. So it's tuned perfectly right now and getting about the maximum mileage possible.

And I try to stay off the Highways and ride the secondary roads at 45 mph :)
