I'm a huge proponent of fabric wiring loom tape.  electrical tape doesn't hold up and leaves tons of slimy residue.

I believe there's also loom tape that only sticks to itself, rather than the wires.

EE 201 is the good, high temperature non adhesive, Elliot tape.  Sadly, discontinued.

From my experience with the OE harnesses, non-adhesive wrap is used for everything other than the ends, which typically use a couple of wraps of sticky electrical tape to seal the ends.

Your experience coincides with my memory.  My Z1A harness was in very bad condition, I chose to go the repro route and ordered the harness and handlebar switches from Z1 Parts Inc.  I am very satisfied with the quality, and everything appears to work as it should.

Thanks for the input. I’m practicing on this harness/Loom to get my A4 as factory correct as possible. So my thoughts are correct the OEM was non adhesive wrap for 90% with adhesive tape at the beginning and termination of the non adhesive wrap. Next question is where to source that non adhesive wrap. Then technique. I witnessed the non adhesive wrap as started at the connector end of the branch, one or two full wraps (to use Wookies description) square to the loom and wound overlapping towards the main loom with the tag end terminating on the main loom and then adhesive taped in place. Then as Wookie says the main wrap covers the branch wrap. It there a better choice then Elliot tape to terminate the non adhesive covering?

" It there a better choice then Elliot tape to terminate the non adhesive covering?"  Japanese electrical tape of course Matt!  The bit of a roll that I have left is "DENKA" brand. No idea if it was used on the harnesses 40+ years ago, but it is really nice tape.

I use silicone tape.  You stretch it and it then sticks only to itself.  It does not stick to wires and leave a sticky mess.  It works great.  Ed

Amalgamating tape from plumbers/builders merchants. Only sticks to itself and the "stickyness" is only activated when you stretch it.
So stretch a couple of turns at the start, then move along at 45 degs stretching as you go. End off with a couple more turns. 100% waterproof as it seals to itself.

Z1000J2 somewhat modified!

Thanks for the research, and suggestions.

The source came up when searching for the Elliot 201 tape Nessism suggested, here’s the site I found

www.wiringharness.com/

I called tech support, a great guy answered, very knowledgeable and helpful. I placed an order for 3/4” non adhesive wrap. I figured if it’s good for reproduction classic car harnesses then it should work for me. Follow up to come once I receive the product.

Edit: Caught up on my thank you’s for the recent suggestions. Appreciate all the replies.

So the 3/4” wide non adhesive tape arrived. Gloss black, looks just like OEM. Sneaky SOB’s peeled the first layer of paper off the ID of the roll removing the manufacture name. I was gonna post if anyone was interested. Might be a minute for me to get to this. Football season, with 3 grandchildren involved. One in cheer and the to older boys one in city ball a the other playing high school. Helping and watching pretty much fills up my weekends. Updates to follow.

google F-4 tape. When stretched ,it sticks to itself. Never gummy. when I worked on F-4D's in the Air Force, it came in red-orange or black. Never found out why.

I don't have a plan and I'm sticken' to it! '77 KZ 650 / 750 GPz custom project in progress
