Hey, KZTrip.

Glad to see another cop bike guy here. Pix of my 97 KZP are in the Gallery of this site. So far, all parts I've needed for the bike have been available from the Kawasaki dealer near me in Sacramento. For some things, like the gas cap assembly, the dealer had to wait while the part was shipped from the Kawasaki warehouse in New Jersey. You'll be amazed at what's still in stock. Of course, there are new old stock parts on the Web as well so you can always find just about anything for these bikes.

I'm glad I decided to keep it totally cop-like. Other drivers on the road really SEE it, which improves your safety.

Cheers,

Dave

Really nice
Where the white radio box come from, that's a completely diff setup than mine
I'm looking for a passenger seat conversion, hoping to find some way to add a seat Shen I need and put the radio box on when I don't
Or just go with a permanent passenger seat

You caught me, man. I used the radio box off of a BMW cop bike. I like the white, and it fits around the tail light perfectly.

As for passenger seats, I'm not a fan, nor is my wife. She learned to ride and has her own bike (Suzuki VS1400).

I may have had to drill one new hole, or not. Frankly, I can't remember. It was an easy job to fit it. The side skirts on the BMW box cover the frame nicely, too.

KZTRIP wrote: Well I just got an 89 KZ1000 Police model
About 50k miles on it
It had been sitting a couple years.
I turned to prime for 10/15 seconds, pulled the choke on, in less than 10 cranks it was running
Inlet it run a bit, then turned it off, needed oil, it was pretty low, added a gallon of fresh gas, to mix with whatever was there, started it back up, and rose it a couple miles home.
Now it's parked in the garage awaiting my decision on what do do next
On the short ride, I noticed a couple things

Lots of rattle noise, I don't think it's engine, probably things hanging lose from the police equip being removed
At some point a had a bit of wobble, not sure, it didn't happen again on the short ride
Otherwise, it ran better than I expected for what it cost me (undisclosed)

Body wise, pretty clean, the radio/saddle boxes are really worn, and hinges broken, so that will have an influence on what kind of project I end up with
There's some scratches and such on the tank, the fairing is in I guess 80% condition! it has duct tape on the corners but I see no cracks, looks like it's just holding the edging on. Windshield isn't crystal clear, but doable.
Wiring for the front blue/red lights were cut, so I'll have to deal with that. the light sockets are in tact.
The controls and switches appear to have oxidation(?) not sure how else to describe it.

Now for the project
Well, the first project is deciding on an actual project, I'm just not sure yet, part of me wants to maintain the police bike look, and part of me wants to convert to a more sporty bike, then I kinda want to add a second seat, if I do that, I may keep the police look on front, with a passenger seat in place of the radio box and saddle boxes, maybe even change color then too

I'd like to keep it running and drivable while doing whatever I do.

So, first, I'm thinking stripping in sections, and thoroughly cleaning things, just to make it all shine a bit better, and adjust things along the way
Is there a method of detail cleaning. I'll probably do a carb clean. Not sure how to determine if it's low oil hurt anything

I also obtained an 86 KZ1000P, in parts, but mostly complete as far as I can tell, haven't inventoried the parts yet, it's missing the carbs, that's all I'm sure of so far, for that one, the fairing is broken at one of the signal lights, not sure I can recover that, I'll be looking in the body forum for trying to fix that if i need it, i think the saddle boxes on the 86 are in better shape, so those may get transferred if I keep the police bike look, I'm hoping most of the parts between the 86 & 89 are interchangeable, please feel free to enlighten me on that

Anyways, I will certainly be looking for pointers here

Thanks in advance to those willing to help/guide

Hard to say but after 48k police miles my top end was tired. It also sat for a very long time. I had to bore it to 1075 because 1015 bore wouldn't clear the scoring on the cylinder walls on 2 and 3. Mine ran great for about a month then went down after shuddering and loss of power. When it did run right, it ran... very fast.

Great job on bike. you are bringing back major memories of my 1994 Kawasaki KZ1000P. I've taken off all the cop stuff on the bike and, now it looks more like a KZ1000. Wiring was quite the project but well worth the hard work and countless hours put into rewiring!

I've finally got it running. Will ride it for a while then, do some more mods then, paint the bike. click on my signature to see before pics and after. Best of luck with your bikes. Happy, safe riding! :)
