Budget Build '78 KZ1000
01 Dec 2012 20:54 - 01 Dec 2012 21:43Attachment kawmockup.jpg not found
Ok, so here I start. Dug out the old KZ from storage the other day and started to assess just what I've gotten myself into. All is good, dove into head first. Started with mocking up the rear suspension. Deceided on doing the duel rear shock setup. Couple of reasons, first I like the look, second it will be a lot easyer to put through the motor vichele inspection that the bike would have to go through every second year.
I included a pic of what I'm thinking of doing. The swingarm is resting on the OEM brake perch (so not at ride height), shock is just placed on bike for photo.

Not sure if its a LTD. How could I identify it. The swinger is a '95 GSXR750 flipped. not sur if this will work yet. I am going to look at a CBR900rr swinger tomorrow

I have an older oil cooler Gsxr750 arm without bracing that may work for you better. If you interested in a trade maybe we can work something out?

Hi Doug,
Thanks for the offer, as of now I'm still weighting out my options. I will keep you in mind though, looks like a nice basic swinger to add mounts to.

That same swingarm worked out fine for me. I'm running it right side up and using the mono shock. Looks like you are off to a good start. One thing that might cause problems with it being upside down is the bracing will probably interfere with the chain.

Hi Testarossa,
I have been looking at your build trend quite a bit. I orginaly wanted to do a mono shock mod, but after talking to some of the bike shops in the area, found out if I did this kind of mod I would have to jump through several firey hoops to legally get the bike on the road. But to keep it twined shocked with a up grade swinger was ok.

Fortunately the inspection process where I live is very basic. No consideration to frame mods whatsoever. If I were in your shoes I would save up for some nice remote reservoir shocks and have the mountings welded to the GSXR swinger. Look at Royalratch's build thread. That's what he is doing and his bike is killer. His is not a budget build by any stretch.

So I picked up the CBR swingarm today. It to is not asymmetrical just like the gsxr swingarm. The brace is though

So off comes the brace
Attachment cbrbrace.jpg not found
GSXR swingarm gets flipped right side up, and CBR brace is mocked up on the bottom. Looks like lots of chain clearance. I do want to get a proper pitch/offset front sprocket, make up bushing for pivit, adjust chain slack, just to make sure nothing is going to rub.

So are you keeping the top brace and adding the underbrace too?
