I think there are two issues with running off the drive. Inconsistency of the drive rpm and no alternator output when riding slow or idle. Alternator have a window of charging efficiency and with the RPM changes post gearbox, that would be difficult to get consistent charging, but maybe not. It might allow for mounting more toward the center of the bike though...

I have seen Harley Custom bike do this by coming off a jack shaft off the primary drive and NASCAR run alternators off the rear differential, so it might be feasible....

I'd like to get one of those set-ups that run off the end of the crank but they use an alt. off a suzuki (I think). Have seen them on a few older Suk's but only one KZ. Takes stress off end of crank. Like on this bike...

That is interesting as I have never seen a kit to do that. Every one I have seen were custom made. I am using an automotive alternator.

Wish I knew...I've only heard of one guy who USED to make these many years ago. Haven't found anyone other then this guy. I heard the belt and pulley they use is from a belt driven fuel pump used for injection units but other then that, I'm not sure. If you have somewhere you can have parts made you could make your own setup though.

I have designed and built my own, well it is almost done! Just in case you hadn't read the thread. If someone had made a kit, I would have been interested in that!

So slight update... Decided to lace and true my wheels myself. Studied the pattern and I am fairly capable, so I decided to practice while waiting on my powder coating supplies. Turns out the spoke kits I bought from Drag Specialties are not right for my hubs. The was some mis leading information on them, so I am returning them. This means custom spoke kits from Buchanan's will have to be ordered tomorrow.... More money being spent....

As a side note decided to pickup a truing/balancing stand. Bought the one from Harbor Freight and have to say it is really pretty nice, especially for the money. Very rugged, well built which is not what I come to expect from that place.... FWIW.

So some good news and bad news.....

The good news is I should have a set of laced and tured wheels by the end of this week and will post pics. My custom spoke kits should be here on Wednesday. I am dropping the hubs off at the powdercoater tomorrow.

The bad news is I am screwed on the cush drive. Just got back my quote from the machining shop and it would be about $2000 to get the three components machined!!! I don't know what I am going to do. I can't afford to spend $2K on just the cush drive. I don't have th equipment to machine it myself either. I understand that time is money, but that seems absurd for three aluminum components.

May have to go direct drive.....
