81 KZ750H Project
25 Jun 2012 18:42
Here is my 81 KZ750 project. I originally thought that I wanted to build a streetfighter, but after searching streetfighter, I don't think it fits the bill. Anyways, it started out as a stock 750 LTD that needed a little TLC. I have allready fitted a 01 GSXR1000 front end and rear end on it. Not exactly sure where I am heading with it, kinda winging it as I go.

I want to try and give some direction that I could not find anywhere although I missed some opportunities to get some good detailed pics when assembling it. I'll start with the rear end. It is a stock 01 GSXR1000 swinger. I really wanted to use the stock pivot bolt, so I searched for a set of bearings that would fit the ID of the swinger and the OD of the pivot shaft. The result was 6203 zz 16. I knocked the roller bearings out of the swinger and put 3 bearings in each side (spacer or bushing would work, but bearings were less expensive). On the inner spacer of the swinger, I pressed in (3) 3/4" x 1" x 2" steel spacers, and then 5/8" x 3/4" bronze bushings in the ends of the inner spacer,(had to grind out approx .004 to fit the shaft) then pressed in the bearings in each side. On the frame I welded 2 3/4 washers together and ground an flat side on them to fit the inner frame.

I had to grind the inner part of the frame that the pivot bolt slides through to account for a wider area of the swingarm with the bearings. I ground them down to the thickness of the 2 washer and it fit quite snug.

On the shock installation, I actually had access to a same model GSXR1000 to get the measurements. I referenced everything off of the swingarm pivot, since it is the only common tie between the 2. I welded a 1" piece of tube stock 6.5" vertical from the pivot, then welded a 3" x 4" x 3/8" piece of flat stock slighlty elevated of the bar to mount the top shock to,then welded some solid 1/2" bar stock for vertical supports. (I did finish weld it a little better at a later date!)

On the lower linkage, I had to do some trial and error to get the ride height, but mainly once I got the top mount to where the stock GSXR was, I played with the bottom linkage until it was where I wanted it. It is roughly at 190 deg.

Bike koks awesome so far. I've got an 82 KZ750ltd that I've be tinkering with for quite awhile and need to get back into it. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this one!

Still got the forks as well as a bunch of other parts that I would let go pretty cheap. don't want much, just a little to buy more parts!

Sounds good. I could really use the forks, triples, and all the front brakes. I could also use the rear brakes caliper/master if they weren't frozen up. Also a headlight bucket/tube brackets. Needless to say I live in Fl and bought a basket case that had been chained to a tree under a tarp, hence the rust. Wish I could find a mondern front end swap for cheap but I haven't come across any. Your's looks great!
Later,
Adam

Well, checked my parts out and they may not be that good for ya. The forks are in good condition, but the PO had taken the lowers off to paint them (which didn't happen) and I am having trouble getting the bolt to draw up on one of them. The calipers are pretty well dried up and oxidized, although I am sure they would clean up. I am using the stock headlight (I think) and used the lower triple and stem for this project. I have alot of parts, but they have been setting in a garage for a few years and have degraded a little more than I had thought.

FYI, I have a little over $200 in my complete front end by shopping around on ebay. Bought piece by piece over time.
