Yeah buddy, this year I am not going to miss Mid-Ohio days. I have to go and see what that's all about. I saw that magazine and it got me really excited. I am thinking about doing that clutch cover that everyone is awe about. I think it looks pretty rad.

Nice, keep them pictures a coming....

Ok I have a bunch more that I took but I couldn't figure out how to do that thing that this other guy on this site did with the time elapsed photography where all the parts come off. That was really cool. It was a lot of fun and a great learning experience having Yianni help me with the teardown. He said that was the easy part. lol It's always easy tearing stuff apart. haha
But... how did you bust a hole in your cases:S ? That sounds like a major deal. Yah I hope that the cylinder boring and machine work go smoothly.
The bike was in great shape other than the blown head gasket. The valve guides were in like new condition as were the cylinder walls all slick and perfectly smooth. Too bad I had to take it apart and now opening her up to 1075. I guess that was a good excuse to do it. I woulda hated to ruin a perfectly good running engine for my own personal speed fix. I guess things in California last longer because they don't have the harsh winters we do here.

I just have one question now. We got the 1075 pistons and block together and was wondering now we are going with the .410 cam grind and was told that you don't need to underbucket the shims if you are under .430 but I am concerned. Don't want to underbucket the shims if it doesn't warrant it yet don't want to throw a shim going down the road.
Any ideas? Kind of wish I just left this engine alone and just fixed the head gasket so that I could have done all of this work to my 79 but hey it should be nice when it's done right?;)

i have always used .418" as the max you should still be safe with.410" i would always go shim under with anything bigger than .418" from the top of that piston you showed it is a good thing you decided to go bigger now it was using some oil from the look of it.

Actually the bike engine internals were almost in perfect shape. The valve guides were not worn at all. Bike had 7 thousand miles on it and someone overfilled the oil before I got it or it wouldn't have blown the head gasket like it did on number 1. I couldn't deal with the back fire upon hard acceleration then decelleration. :P But I could have left it alone and just got the head cleaned up a bit and put it back on  but since I had it apart I got crazy idea of doing a little something extra to it.;) Now maybe I am having second thoughts about that because I have my 79 to do crazy things with. Woulda been nice to keep one stock and unmolested.

Thanks for the advice! I can't wait to get it back on the
road as now I have to wait for another adjustable sprocket because the other one wouldn't work.

Yeah.... Ever watch that movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels??? lol Rhupert... come here Rhupert. Ahhh haaaahhh classice.
I will put more pics up of her going back together. I have never done an engine before. I was going to go around Lake Michigan tomorrow morning yet no go. I was almost ready to go back for that zx14 until I saw they put a bastardized extension on the swingarm. Don't know about that. The bike looked nice enough until I saw that. Nice and low to the ground but I think I would have preferred to have it stock with the exception of a nice pipe for the time being.PLUMMEN wrote:

Well, she is almost done. By tomorrow I think should be all finished. I will put up pics of the reassembly as soon as I can download them. Just waiting on getting the cams degreed. Went with the .410 cams and slotted sprokets instead of the .398.
This is my very first experience with breaking an engine down and putting it back together. I am glad to have Yianni at EPE show me the ropes. He is a straight up gear head and friend. He is the brains of the operation and I am the grunt. What a learning experience this has been!
Really excited to see about how she feels when I mount her and... never mind my mind drifted to the girl on the poster next to the tool box. Now I see where these guys get the inspiration to work on bikes for hours on end. :P
I am going to send my head to Larry Cavanough for the 79 and I think I am going to do around 1197 or something. That project I am going to get up on this winter and probably spend most of my hard earned income on. Shooting for a rolling chassis by next summer and then the motor and paint to be done by the following summer. This will be one to watch for sure.

Fired it up about an hour ago. Sounds like I have never heard it sound before, beastly. Put a big grin on my face. When we put the valve cover on we had clearance problems and had to grind out the casting marks on the inside to get it to clear properly along with the pollution valve jackets. I can only imagine trying to put in anything bigger. Would have to grind away at the wall of the head pretty good.
Tomorrow is the day to fire it up and check for leaks. Hopefully all goes without incidence and I get to ride it again.
