New Member - Old Bike 81' Z750

Hi all,

This is my third go at posting an introduction from my smartphone... My name is Scott, I live in Newcastle Australia and I have recently bought an 81' Z750L. In the week and a bit that I've had it, I've changed the oil and filter, drained old fuel from carbs and tank, bled the brakes replacing the old fluid with new and fitted a gear rack and a new front tyre.

The bike goes really well, it is a real joy to ride. I grew up around these old Japanese bikes, but I seem to remember them going a little quicker than this one does. I need to get the carbs balanced, but before investing in a service I thought I'd come get some advice on whether to tune or upgrade to a better carb.

The bike is stock standard at the moment with Keihin carbs.

I'm also hoping to get some advice on brake upgrades if there are any?

Will post photos when I can find a way to shrink them down!

Thanks,

Scott

If you have CV carbs the diaphragms could be hardened. New ones could make the difference.

No disrespect toward Steve, but don't go off spending money on things like new slides or diaphragms before you remove the ones you have and inspect them. Most likely they are fine. I've rebuilt scads of carbs and only rarely are the diaphragms bad.

I'd tear down the carbs and go through them. Those carbs are a bit of a pain to tear down because of the choke butterfly linkages but it's doable.

These photos are the latest set I did.

Those carbs look fantastic, I have a lot to learn before I can do something like that with mine. But winter is coming soon and I won't ride to work in July, so I have time to study up!

Thanks for the tip!

I like those 750Ls! Kinda like a cross between a GPz and a 750E (which is where that tail piece cam from) . Take care of that tank. Very hard to get, at least up here.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

First ride to work today and all went well.

I think I need to get these carbs balanced though, the bike seemed to struggle past 70mph... Tried to overtake a truck doing 65 and I seemed to top out at 70.
