New guy in Phoenix

Hello, I bought my first kz1000p this morning. She's pretty beat up but I'll hopefully breathe some life back into her. It's a 1995 someone tried to make into a cafe racer.guy told me she had been sitting for about a year. I took the carbs off and cleaned them all out but it doesn't seem like I'm getting fuel into the engine. The bowls are full though. Maybe some of you guys can help me along the way.look forward to talking with all of you

The pilot jets are very small. Use a guitar string or a strand of wire from a wire brush to make sure they're open.

I'll pull the carbs back out tomorrow and try that. Previous owner put dyna tech coils and ignition on and didn't set the timing so gotta figure that out also.

Apparently this bike has quite a story. It was purchased by a marine in California after it was retired from being a lapd bike and the marine was transferred to a base in Hawaii and took the bike with him. Then sold it to a guy in the army in Hawaii and he got transferred to luke afb here in Phoenix and decided to sell it and that's where I came along. Funny part is I'm retired navy!.the more I dig into the bike the more "jerry rigging"I find.....gonna be a long recovery for her but I'll enjoy every step of the way

This is what I started with. It sat under a tree for 15 years.

I bought it new in 75. Was a single parent, no money for a bike. Now I'm a grandpa and ride Bossie the Kaw to visit my grandchildren as much as I can.

Welcome to the forum. You have a good start and a bike with a cool story. I live in Mesa if you need a hand. I just disassembled a set of carbs and took them down to Eastside Motorcycle and paid them $80 to clean all the parts ultrasonically. If you don't want to do that I suggest disassembling them down to individual carbs and buy a can of carb-dip and let them soak for for at least 24 hours, jets and all. I did this with a set of VM26's I have from when my bike was stock. I never had an issue with those carbs. Still have them on the shelf. If you do this, take a LOT of reference pics. Good luck!

I'll be sure to hit you up jon. The bike had floor boards but for whatever reason they cut them off the frame and made pegs out of lead pipe. I wish I was making that up but unfortunately I'm not. So that's the kind of jerry rigging I'm up against. But yes cool bike with a cool story. Hope to get her running so I can ride it soon. Gonna pull the carbs back out in the morning and try to get the timing set correctly.

When you work on the carbs do NOT mix parts between the carbs. The parts tend to wear together and don't like to be moved to other carbs. Ed

One thing to think about as well....

Before getting all carried away at the carbs,,,,

While working on another members Police Special, spent a couple days around those beautiful BS-34's (Ha) Off & clean/ON, Off & clean/On etc... before I realized something else was wrong... Clutch perch safety... I was like WTF, seriously!.... hahahahaha...

The Police Specials pending model (P-Series) have 2 engine start safety switches.
1) At the side kick stand
2) At the clutch Perch

Get yourself a manual most definitely....
