Finally registered

Hey there everybody! I've been reading around here off and on for awhile and finally decided to just sign myself up. I have a 1997 KZ100 Police that my step dad gave to me when he decided to get his Harley, and I am doing a lot to it currently. For starters, I am pretty much un-policifying it, nothing wrong with it but I don't like the huge fairing and what not. I'm swapping engines with a 2002 KZ100 as well, as he had that one for parts. Now I have the engine and everything removed and the frame is ready to be sent off for powder coating (once I decided what color I am going with... indecisiveness...) I have some questions though. I know that ~82 or 83 the started with the 1000j motors, Whenever I look for any parts on the bikes the newest I usually see is the '82 KZ1000, which I believe is the 1000j. Even going through hear it appears that the majority of the people don't have any past '82. Why is this? If it is the 1000j are parts interchangeable from '82-'02? Any advice/comments/flaming/help you have is appreciated. I hope to have this bike up and running soon Thanks!

I'm gonna guess here... Did they go to fuel injection in 82? Maybe?

Nope carbed all the way.(minus the 80 z1 classic)

Most of the kz line stopped in 83-85 or so; with the exception being the kz1000p. The rest of the line turned into zephyr's, gpzs, then later ninjas and :puke: v-twin cruisers. Kind of explains the lack of newer KZs huh?

So then why don't folks transplant newer "p" motors into older machines? Very interested now!

The 81-02 motors are the J motors, most folks with the earlier kickstart motors think the J's are ugly (great performance motors, still ugly) and rather keep the old one in.

But there are a lot of customized cop bikes on here, just dig around a little and check it out. Some are in the project section, others in the kz drag/street picture thread.

When they disposed of the kick start they lost me. I agree about the V twins. :sick: One thing about them though, they don't leak like the Hogs.

I have an '88. As far as I know its the same bike as the '97/'02 you have. There seems to be plenty of post '82 around the NW. At least they come up on crags list. I think there was a bunch of them sold by funeral escort companies when most cities banned funeral motorcades for the general populous.

I bought mine from a person who claimed the bike was from the Denver PD. The story goes that Denver PD generally only put on 25k miles and then gave them to the Colorado police academy who rode them to 30k or they were wrecked. The Colorado police academy then sold them in 10 bike lots, sight unseen, to funeral escort companies. The escort companies road the ones that worked and used the others for parts. He said the price was firm at $500 because it ran. He said others looked like they rolled down a cliff. So when you buy/have a police bike you have to appreciate what may be getting. A bike that was likely ridden by a variety of police men who drop it off at the motor pool if it stops working, and then given to academy students to learn to ride like a cop. I have see videos of a group of academy cadets riding them around in a gravel pits and putting them down quite frequently. After the rent a cops were done with them they quickly remove the cop electrics with a pair of dikes and sell them to the public.

Its a testament to the design that they could be ridden that hard and put away wet so many times and they still run great.

The only real mod I did to mine was to remove the boards in favor of pegs. Mine is the second post in.

Those frames look like they're beefed up. Not like my Z1 frame.

That's a really cool build he did, neat idea! If I was going for the sport bike transformation I'd definitely be using that as inspiration.

That's really cool. I've been wondering about that swap but didn't want to get into messing with the frame. I find it funny as soon as I asked the question, I was able to find a paper trail which lead me to the information. All 1000j motors are the same, as well as the bikes the go into -- except the early (I think it said '80-'81 or something like that) models which had just a different cam. The PO of you bike stated it was from Denver PD, are you in Colorado? I live East of Colorado Springs, Denver is about 1.5 hours from me depending on which way I take. I might have to stick which the footboards for now though, as I am sending the bike off on Tuesday for the powder coating and won't have time to get replacement parts before then.
