am I making a mistake
06 Oct 2007 14:57
Hi there KZ gurus, I'm a new member and realy thankful I came across the site. There is so much information available and everyone seems willing to help each other out.
I own a 1984 KZ1100R wich I bought about 10 years ago in 5 separate boxes. I put it all back together and it ran first try ( the guy didn't have a shed, so he took it all apart, I didn't understand either ).
Here is my dilema, I just bought a 99 ZRX swingarm, 2005 ZZR wheels and front forks but I'm reluctant to change my stock bike (except Kerker Header ). Would I be commiting sacrilige by making the conversion on this pretty rare model or is it not as rare as I think?
Thanks
Gary

Gary, its your bike.. if what you want to do is this coversion then do it.. make something special that you will be able to enjoy I might be wrong but I would think no one here will hold that against you no matter how rare or common your bike is.. this site thrives on new ideas and motor oil as well as the appreciation of original form.. so have at it

Hello Gary...I second what kz650csr81 said...it is your bike so do what makes you happy. Personally, I lean towards the 'restoration' camp...I tend to keep my bikes on the stock side...I figure if I want a bike to handle like a ZZR or ZRX, I'll buy one. Others will argue with me:) Another consideration is that you do have a rare bike...only imported into Canada and Europe and not many made:)

See Gary?
It's personal choice. We all just sort of dig bikes, and especially the KZs. Post up some pics of your steed! We'll geek on it and tell you how much we like it...and then we'll start fighting over what to "do/not to do" to it! :silly:
Welcome...now post pics!

I would keep it as stock as possible, but that's a reflection of my mature (old?) mindset (I never followed such advice in my early years). But, given the fact that nearly all of us change something along the way, I would simply suggest you don't make any changes that cannot be reversed and that you store the original parts carefully. That way if you decide to sell the bike later, you can return it to a condition that will be more marketable, or if you keep it for 30 years (as I have with my KZ650) you can put it back to stock if you like. Thanks for all the feedback guys, all good points. I think I'll go ahead and make it ride as good as it looks but do as 650ed suggests and keep all the stock parts and not make any unreversable mods. I think I'll have both the swingarm and forks powder coated black just to keep with the original look.
Are there any major problems with this kind of upgrade ( stock footpegs fitting around rear swingarm, stock shocks fitting on , stock handle bar and controls on new front end, etc)or is it all pretty straight forward.
By the way, does anyone know where I could get a replacement windscreen.
I'll post some pics of the Blue Monster when I get back from a business trip.

Two avenues...(1) eBay and have patience...they do appear eventually. Your bike will have the same windscreen as KZ1000R1, R2, KZ1100B2, and KZ750R1
and
(2) Google the term Maier...they sell a replacement GPz-style windscreen for about US$80.00

I am in the "stock" camp. Mostly I like the stock look. But as stated if you do mods, try to make them reversible. Sometimes I see bikes that are highly customized and that's ok for the current owner but IMO it lowers the value. And we MUST have pics!

That's a nice looking bike. Looks like you've done quite a bit of work there. What size back tire are you runnung?
