I painted my tank emblems, and the chrome part is a bit dinged up. I was thinking about using 1000 and then 2000 grit on a hard block to polish up the face a bit. Are these things made out of pewter? or will it rust if i sand it down?

If the question 'will they rust?' then the answer is no.

I sanded flat black paint off of mine a few years ago. (for some reason the PO thought it was cool) I end up caught in the rain quite a bit and it hasn't rusted

Try a magnet on them. If they stick they will rust; if they don't they won't rust. Ed

They are Aluminum! The older ones. Later style KZ1000 are plastic. Strip em, glass bead em, chrome em! Many options. Have Ram make you decals!
What is your plan? Stock? Custom? Hot Rod? Unique?
I did this to an old set of KZ 900 emblems. Goes with my glass bed theme. The paint will be pearl white. One of these years I'll do it. This summer for sure. Got some time now. Finished work on a 33 Willy's A/A nostalgia gasser. Got to be in Bowling Green in June.
Here is a pic of the glass beaded aluminum emblems, black added, then clear coated. Been like this for 10 years.

Thanks for the replies guys. i ended sanding them with 1000 and then 2000 and it brought the brightness back. they look better. One set is for the KZ400 i'm restoring and the other is for my 1000 project, i'll pick the best two for the 1000.

OEM 70's Kawasaki emblems are aluminum and were clear anodized, then they painted the black and white. You can sand or strip the anodizing off and buff them to restore the shine to the raised highlighted area.
