Gas tank liner!

Thanks for all the input guys! I've decided to hold off on lining my tank. I found a water based product called metal restore. Basically you soak the tank for about 4 hrs and surface rust is gone, rinse tank thoroughly and keep filled with gas so rust doesn't reappear. My tank is pretty clean on the inside, I think I'm just being paranoid. This bike is coming along nicely can't wait to ride!

If your tank is clean or even if it has surface rust don't coat it, If the rust is flaky and you can't get a replacement tank, then go ahead. Metal Rust is good, Evapo-Rust is somehow good and electrolysis works well too.

I cleaned mine recently using a bunch of BB pellets, metal ones thanks God, otherwise I couldn't be able to remove them, I had to use a magnet to get them out of the tank. Then I tried Apple Cider Vinegar which worked ok, but not great and ended with the Evapo-Rust. The tank is almost pristine now. There are a few small rust spots but very superficial.

I have seen engine deposits and carbs junked up and to me, unless you desperately need to use it, I would just leave it alone. Today, you can buy a brand new body set painted for less than a decent paint job costs and this includes the chrome cap and badges. 1200 may be expensive to some and you may not think it's any good because it's aftermarket but I bought a tail fin and sidecovers. I Guarantee you that the quality is as OEM. If you turned them over you would only know that they were not OEM from not seeing Made in USA or Made in Japan but side by side there is no other difference. I was hesitant but I'm really glad I purchased my set over some used and abused overpriced junk.

I used the caswell gas tank liner on my old yamaha xj650, after cutting the old leaky seams off and welding in new sheet metal/ body work. I put the sealer in just in case I had any pinholes in my welding.

I followed included instructions and it seeled to work good!

because of the gas tank design, I could not get the leftover resin out as much as I would like, so I just kept rolling it around for a while until it got sticky and didn't pool up.

+1, I've had this stuff in my tank for 15+years and still looks good. The trick is not to be tempted to hurry, mine took around 7days turn around to do the job properly, follow the instructions carefully.

at first I thought you meant regular POR-15 paint. lol.

I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY with Drooz! Having done this myself several times, if the surface isnt properly cleaned / prepped..... it doesnt matter if Kit cost $1000.....it wont work :blink:

I have used Por 15 several times... IF.... tank is clean, properly prepped.....works great!!

I've been down this path several times before: derusting, lining, and even stripping old liners. Por-15 is my favorite, unless there are holes, then I think Caswell's Epoxy is better (it's really thick and sturdy).

For derusting, phosphoric acid is my prefered choice. Don't let it sit on the paint though. Home Depot sells some stuff denoted as "Metal Prep" which is concentrated phosphoric acid. Keep the tank wet by turning it every 5 min's for an hour or two and the rust will be gone.

The liner companies suggest that derusting completely is not needed, but I've always hedged my bet by derusting as much as possible. After you rinse out the acid, rinse well with water and blow dry. A hair drier set on low heat for an hour should take care of business. Just make sure the tank is fully dry before going to the liner step.

yeah I think if the instructions are folled good and you're not lazy with prepping, many products will work well.

I'm with the adage, if it ain't broke. I have never coated any of my tanks. That said, I have a z1r that has a coated tank, so far looks good. But I too have seen tanks that were coated and the stuff gets in carbs and piston tops.
