As with any product, don't give a crap what it is, if prep work and detail isn't followed to specs, going to turn out like shit no matter what.... ;)

Like Mr. Rock said, its all in the prep, and following the directions. I coated my MK II tank back in '80 with Kreem. And till this day it has no issues what so ever!!! Plus I stored the bike the last 10 years or so with some Unocal 76 leaded race gas that I left in the tank. I just found that out last week when I moved the bike out of storage. I turned one of the petcocks on to see if the lever was still free and this pink stuff ran out all over the place.

I used muriatic acid to etch the inside of my tank back then. Make sure there is not ONE DROP OF WATER left in that tank before you pour the Kreem in. The Kreem WILL NOT stick to any wet spots inside of tank. Another thing I also do is that I coat the tank as soon as it is dry. Not the next day, but right after I dry the inside of tank.

I never used Kreem that was shipped in real cold winter weather. Shake the living hell out of it before you pour it in too. After I made sure I had a good coating all the whole inside of tank, I would drain the excess out through the threaded petcock mounting bosses. I would then pour it back in, and put like a second coat inside the tank before the first coat had completely dried. I tried to get all of the remaining Kreem out of tank by angling the tank downward toward the petcock opening. You will not believe how much extra Kreem comes out of the tank when you do that. I would then leave the tank out in the sun for two or three days before I would put fuel into it.

The Kreem liner inside my tank has turned from white to a pink color from the Unocal gas I used to run in my bike. I also used VP C12 and C14 over the years too. I have done something like 15 to 20 tanks over the past 25 years or so, and not one of them did the Kreem coating not dry, or flake off over the years the bikes were used.

i've seen Kreme fill the fuel bowls on carbs with the pink slime.... I didn't do theKreme install on any of the tanks that I've seen this happen to.......I just cleaned up the mess.....the kreme in all of these tanks had turned pink ......... Poor installation or Ethanol I guess , it was dissolving the liner for some reason.....that's why I go with the two part epoxy....... No kreme for me :pinch:

Ya, like I said, prep, prep, prep!! :cheer:

With the sketchy fuels out there these days, if you're gonna line a tank, I'd still recommend an epoxy liner such as Caswell's. B)

I tried red kote on a tank with a microscopic pinhole leak. It didn't work despite following the directions to the letter.

Kreme fill the fuel bowls on carbs with the pink slime

This slime bypassed the In-line fuel filter, really it didn't stop this...? :S

In case others are concerned, Ethanol here in AZ during winter moths, tank liner still off white color as was from day one....

If truly worried about the liner product(s):
The tank cleaner alone would more than likely be enough on 98% of most rusted tanks....
Translation, most kits are 3 parts for tank lining. Part one is to clean out the rust only (no sealing), similar to acid wash. The tank is completely filled and left over night to break down the rust....

If the wash isn't dripping out the seams, then truly no reason to line the tank if you choose, just get rid of the rust and call it good as new...

I would avoid any type of tank liner/sealer unless it is unavoidable and you need to stop a leak without ruining the paint work.
If you are repainting anyway then get the job done correctly and have the tank welded or brazed.
If the tank doesn't leak then applying sealer for the sake of it is just a waste of time and money.

I don't know about ethanol levels elsewhere ,but since we here in the (Ohio,KY. IND. area) U.S. are subject to ETHANOLfrom corn .....
I get this crap full (10% min.) time  . thanks to our EPA... any early 80's tank that I am going to repaint and spend money on to paint , get's sealed....... Nothing nicer than investing in a new paint job to have it ruined by leaks ..... For me, 2 part epoxy tank sealers have proven to be impervious to  ETHANOL  AND race fuels :S they do not break down or fail /come off if prep is done properly :S

Ethanol site quote : Is ethanol corrosive ?

Yes , ethanol is corrosive, but not very much. Gasoline is corrosive too. Ethanol is biodegradable in water. So it has a tendency to contain and attract water. It is not the corrosive properties of ethanol that can cause damage to your vehicle; it is the water which can rust a vehicle’s fuel system from the inside out. Today’s vehicles (since mid 1980s) have fuel systems which are made to withstand corrosive motor fuels and rust from water. quote

Another reason to use an epoxy liner is on a fibreglass tank. Modern fuels aren't compatible here either.

last time I bought a 3 quart kit (2 qt's of epoxy and 2 pints of hardener) . you have to get your own cleaner......1 kit (1 qt /1 pint) will do a big KZ tank with a little left over.... it's silver after mixing , flows like warm pancake syrup...... and it gets real hard after curing.... I will have to check the cans label (read: dig em out) when it gets a little warmer.....Brrrrrrr. :S

Am pretty sure that some Harleys came from the factory with lined fuel tanks.
But am uncertain as to what years or whether Harley still does this.

Good Fortune! :)
