Gas tank liner! was created by jmoney05
Anybody use a product called red Kote? It is a gas tank liner of some sort. Giving my tank a new paint job and body work, figured I coat the inside of the tank while I was doing everything else.

I've never used a tank liner myself...I've cleaned them using vinegar...pain in the ass ordeal...but does work...

I've seen a new product to line gas tanks (if they are rusted) that the new gasoline doesn't affect it.

It's an ad in the Café Racer mag...searching...ok my mistake...readers of that mag don't actually fix their own bikes...
Found it www.flowliner.co.uk

Hope that helps,

Dave

Unless the inside of your tank has problems I would not coat it with anything. If tanks are kept reasonably filled with fuel they won't rust or leak. However, tank liners will fail over time and cause issues in the tank, and unless you have a quality in-line fuel filter can cause problems in the carbs. Ed

I would only coat if it was very rusted and pitted.

These coatings can be tricky and are prone to fail.

I would try to clean first....several people on here know how to do it. ......as this topic has come up before.

I agree with all the above statements. Resist the urge to line your tank unless there's no other alternative. :(

However, if you must, consider Caswell's epoxy liner. It seals leaks and has been inside my KZ1000 tank for 7 years with no issues. :cheer: It ain't cheap, but...

You get what you pay for, IMO. B)

POR 15 is what I use, its awesome. I personally have never had an issue with it and have not talked to anyone who has used it and not liked it.

There are probably several ways to go here. IMO, it's all about the surface prep. It doesn't mater what you're putting a coat of paint (for example) on. The better the prep, the better the finished product.

Whatever you decide on, read the instructions carefully and follow them to the letter. :)

I bought my ltd not running. and was told the carbs wear junk would not run..
For the quick fix I bought a new set of carbs and the bike ran for a couple days and then just stopped .found what looked like brown sugar in the bowl's and new right then that even though the tank liner looked great it had to be failing somewear..
The previous owner used cream it took 6 weeks of acetone soaks along with tumbling fish gravel once a week just to get that shit out of the tank.
Not to mention the few weeks of trouble shooting and spending before finding out what was wrong...
I've been told by MANY people on this site that unless theirs some sort of leak in your tank resist the tank liners.
I used a 25 dollar tank kit from Yamaha its a 2 bottle process and just keep fuel in it and it won't rust..and if you do line your tank the PREP is most important ..

The 2 bottle Yamaha kit is just an acid wash to remove the rust.and then a neutralizer

:( I've seen so many bad Kreme jobs over the years..... always flaking and peeling  .....It may have been like OMR said ,BAD PREP JOB   ;) I use a 2 part epoxy that's silver after mixing and it is rock hard after curing a few hours..... sealed all pin holes on a badly rusted tank..... of course I did a acid etch rust removal before lining/sealing .....ethanol/race fuel proof. ;)
