i got the mounts welded on and ground back to shape.still need to do a little finish sanding and drill some bar mount holes.i thought they turned out nice, the forged aluminum of the tree and the extruded aluminum that i made the gauge mounts out of didn't want to play nice together.welding aluminum is tricky.

anybody with machining tools willing to take my kz stem and 99 r1 bottom w/stem still in and put the kz stem in the r1 tree? I will pay whatever a machine shop would charge. I have access to nearly no tools here at school, and would prefer to support a KZR member with experience than taking it to a machine shop.

Did you end up welding the lower triple tree to the stem like the stock one had been? If not, what held it in? If yes, was the triple tree steel? Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this.

with most of these swaps you are putting the steel kz stem into the aluminum lower form the donor bike.

so,
no welding dissimilar metals together.

if the kz stem is originally welded in the lower then i make a stepped sleeve that will register on a counterbore in the lower triple, and weld it together inside.

you can see the counterbore in the bottom of this lower triple, that the step that is now on the stem will register on.

once they are pressed together the force of the clamping action of tightening the nuts will insure that it is not going anywhere.
