kz1000 flasher dinged was created by KZmarcel
Hi all,
continuing to clean stuff up, I went through the wire loom, removing dirt.

A. Found that this flasher device was dinged.
Should I replace it ? What is it for, by the way, is that the one for the "warning lights" ? When we started the bike with the Provious Owner, those warning lights did work. And the ding did not happen afterwards.
I'm just wondering if this is one of those fire hazard things or if I just stick it back in the rubber boot thing.

B. Also, what is that second double-fused thinggie ? I'll look around in the workshop manual but it might take me a while...

I guess I'll do a full session of freshening contacts soon, with sandpaper and contact cleaner and all...

Cheers

The flasher is either for your signals or your hazard switch.  Those fuses are your main electrical fusing.  I would clean that rust if it was my bike.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

THANKS !
I will definitely clean all rust I find on all connectors, starting with these fuse holders. Part of the whole process of rejuvenation of this bike I just bought.

Would you say the dinged flasher needs replaced, though ?

Hey KZmarcel,  If the flasher works, then you can replace if you wish.  If cosmetics matter to you or if they fail.

However, as hardrockminer wrote, please for your sake, clean those connections at your fuse box.  If you do not, they will eventually arc, short and even cause a fire or melt your fuse box.  If you do not clean these properly, one day you will regret it such as when you are on a ride.  Believe me, I know from personal experience.  Here is my fix for those dirty connections:
- Take some fine sand paper/emery cloth and scuff those connections.  I wrapped and wound my sandpaper around a Q-Tip and small round stick.
- Get some DeoxIT 5 Electrical contact cleaner spary.  It is used for many applications even musical and electronic equipment.  This can be obtained from many sources.

Happy Trails

Electronic shops sell small glas fiber brushes for cleaning and deoxide circuit board connections and they are not so abrasive like sandpaper.

Scirocco has a good point.  I simply used what I had on hand.    Bought the DeoxIt D5 on the recommendation of another OA member.  My bike had no ignition prior to cleaning with the DeoxIt 5.  Once applied to the fuse box clips and connections leading into the fuse box, I had ignition immediately.

I also recommend going through as many of your electrical connections as possible.  I have added color correct shrink tubing and cleaned more connections to prevent future shorting and grounding

Sounds great, I'm ordering this little pen right now, looks like it'll do a less frustrating job of cleaning contacts.

Yes, I'm planning to scrub and clean every contact I can get my hands on.

Old school typewriter erasers work well to clean many electrical contacts.  Theyt're soft-ish to conform to the profile of a surface, and just abrasive enpough to clean oxidation & light corrosion.

Interesting. Bought a bunch of tools from an architect a while back, wondering if there is this kind of old-school erasing device in that stash (he had like 3 electric vibrating erasers...)

A "vibrating eraser"??  Now that IS interesting.  Never heard of such a thing.  And he had 3 of them!!  Busy man or he made lots of mistakes.
