Woodhead's '77 KZ1000A resto mod attempt.

So, right now I don't have a c/s sprocket. That was what I was trying to figure out when I ran into this. Any recommendations on how far offset? As far as the carrier goes, I was really hoping I wouldn't need to lathe it because I don't know of any machine shops where I live. So is it the face where the sprocket sits? I figured an offset sprocket of .500 in (13mm) and shave .354 in (9mm) off the carrier, that would put me at .854 in (21.69 mm) which is pretty close to what I measured. What do ya think? Yea or nay? Do they even make them that far offset? Hmmmm...  Is there enough material on the carrier to remove that much without compromising the strength? Let me know what ya think. I'll post pics of my slave cylinder plate when the paint dries and I can handle it. 

I've done loads of these 17" wheel swaps and for a 5.5" rim = 170/180 tyre ( which is the widest wheel you can fit true central or without scalloping the frame for the chain run ) you need a 5/8ths offset front sprocket and then machine the rear sprocket carrier to align the chain.
I tend to use the zxr750, zx7r or zx9r 5.5" wide rims which need 8mm off the sprocket carrier face and the last build i used a Z750 wheel with the same spoke pattern as your zx6  which needed a similar amount removing.

 

Thanks for the input! Using your advice, I figured that a 5/8 (.625) offset sprocket and shaving the carrier 6mm (.236) would equal the .850 showing not the scale. Agreed?
IF my math is right,  I should be in the ball park. So,  I'll have to do some digging to find if someone even makes a sprocket that far offset?  
By the way I do have the wheel centered in the frame. I  don't fancy the thought of moving the wheel off center,  can't be good for handling. 

They are available (this is a UK supplier) so I guess there must be a vendor stateside that can supply

As long as the wheel is true central in the frame the sprocket carrier face needs to be 101mm from the centerline of the rim to get perfect sprocket alignment with a 5/8th offset front.
Offset sprockets of 1/4", 1/2", 5/8" and 7/8" etc are common and should be easily available online or from race shops such as Orient Express, MRE  etc.

I would suggest waiting until the motor is located “as it will be “ with the new sprocket installed and the same with the rear wheel then take your final measurements before machining the sprocket carrier

Yes, that sounds like a good plan. I have no idea where to get a machine shop that does "walk ins", ya know what  I mean.  I have a couple of feelers out with friends in different states, so  I'll see what turns up. Thanks for the help guys.
