1973 Z1 rebuild

The paint on that set is indeed beautiful. I can’t help but wonder what a matching color on the frame would look like? Black is universally acceptable but what if… ?
What type of red paint is that on frame? Rattle can? It has held up well.

The frame was powdercoated - its over 25 years old and it is still in perfect condition.  Its actually a bit grimy because I have been man handling it while stripping the bike.  If I polished the powdercoat it would shine right up.
Im going to have it stripped and powdercoated gloss black.  
What color where you imagining ?

This bike is going to be real head turner, cant wait for the progress.

Well I’m a "black frame" type of guy but for some reason I like that particular red on your frame. The red won’t go with that paint set so I was thinking a matching orange frame (or possibly matching root beer) but if it were mine, orange.
I know getting exact colors with powder coat is either difficult or impossible.

 

The red frame worked with a red bike.
im not sure about the candy orange frame with the Jaffa paint tho ?

 

Maybe Rootbeer frame  and highlite it with some Orange pinstriping

The red bike in its glory days was gorgeous. It still is.
Plus, KTM seems to do alright with orange frames.

But let’s keep this going guys, he’s thinking about it.

100% Black frame !

I think I'm pretty much settled on the black frame, I want to return the bike to looking as much like a 73 Jaffa as possible, so after de chroming is done, alloy items will be hand polished, some steel will be chromed (mudguards, headers etc) and other steel items (swingarm, front hub etc) back to black again.

I have dropped the barrel of at the engine place, the MTC sleeves have metal O rings in them that need replacing and it will require a light hone to clean it up.  As with most things mechanical these days there is a waiting list, in this case 6 weeks, but I still have plenty to do in the meantime.
I have stripped the head completely down ready for a hydrablast clean up but will have to wait for the barrel to come back so I can get that done at the same time. 
The pistons are cleaned up and all shiny, when I was measuring the pistons and bore, these pistons are actually 72.5 mm, giving a displacement of 1090 cc.
 

When I do a Z1/KZ engine I strip it down to the cases.  At that point I'm able to wrestle it in and out of the frame by hand.  I've never painted one, but I have only Z1B's and KZ1000's that weren't painted originally. 

I lay the engine on its side and lower the frame on it with a hoist.  Opposite for removal.

I was about to pull the engine out by hand - asked the Mrs to hold the frame and she said, what are you doing - you've got an engine hoist, why dont you use it ?
I looked over to the hoist about 1 metre away from me, I didnt really have an answer, so I pulled it around.
