KZ1000A1 Spare Parts Project

I am trying to get a set of meters together. I got hold of an old 650 tach which I'll restore - more likely I'll just pull it apart and paint everything before sending it off to get the damping sorted and everything reassembled. As far as I am aware, if I paint the needle white there should be no discernible difference to the 1000A1 tach. Is this right or am I missing something? Redline is at 9000 on the used meter.

Also wondering if the MKII meters are the same size? Then I could get this speedo: eBay item 153974597667
and put this face plate on it: eBay item 293416893539

Last question: anybody using a set of replica meters? I've not heard good things but they're pretty cheap (under €100 each from CMS).

Below is a picture of my stock 1977 KZ650 tach.  The outer edge of the dial is black.  Later models had a blue ring around the outer edge.  Ed  

 

Thanks Ed. The one I have on the way is from a later model then (green/blue bevel). I assume it will still be a direct fit?

I believe the fit is the same.  Ed

Got word back from the guy balancing the crank today. The taper for the rotor is way out of whack. The bike was pretty banged up on that side (cracked case, bent steering head, ...) so I imagine the end of the crank got a whack. I did wonder why the 17mm rod I have fit through the small ends OK but I had about 0.65mm runout. The guy said it needs to be stripped down and rebuilt. 
So I'm now looking for another crank as I really don't want to sink that much money into it - not for a build with a stock engine.

I feel ya. 3 cranks for my 900 project and not one good enough to drop in. I’ve been talking once a week with a crankshaft builder weighing options. In not looking to ruin a good build with a marginal crank. Two of the cranks have galled up small ends. The third has good rods but the bearings are gritty. Not sure if I want to try a fourth! 

Yeah, I've been going back and forth on it as well. Either go for another crank and hope for the best, or push back the engine build and pay for the rebuild piecemeal while I'm working on the chassis. Second option comes with piece of mind, first option I could just get lucky and find a good crank first time. Have a crank lined up - actually an entire ST bottom end for €150. Can strip it down, sell the rest and end up with a free crank so it's probably the best option for now.

Went through everything again today (mainly the finances). Decided to concentrate on getting the restomod finished and this thing back to a rolling chassis with the electrics done. After that I'll revisit the crank problem.

I feel your pain Calum, I think for most of us budget is the limiting factor to the "I'd like to" ideas we dream up. It certainly will be when I start the build on my 82Ltd soon.

Yeah, the restomod has been a bit of a money pit, but I have pretty much all the parts now so I should be able to get it pretty much finished without too much damage to the bank account. As far as this project goes, once I pick up the frame etc. from the powder coaters I have a fair bit of work I can do without spending too much money. Have two sets of used meters on the way that will take some work to get a working pair out of, then there's the wiring...

So these absolute gems arrived today 
Yes, that is some transparent blue plastic that someone cut to fit the meters!  An yes, the needles have been painted silver
The rings have taken a bit of a hammering but both backing plates and one front housing are perfect, the other housing has some minor dents in one spot that can be easily tidied up and then put at the bottom for good measure. Both needles were smooth but the speedo returned to zero quite heavily. Think that may need to be sent out to get the damper fluid replaced. Will need a bit of hair wax(?) to whiten up the 10ths wheel on the trip meter and odometer. Other than that they will make a good set of meters.Does anyone know if you can get a replacement for the rubber seal under the crimp rings?
