That's exactly the kind of argument I could see myself using, to feel good about my decision...

After pulling the clutch, if you choose to go that way, dropping the pan would be a good plan and look for metal in the debris. A nice clean pan is always good.

I work slow, but eventually I get stuff done All great tips here! I almost gave up and sold the project, but I am back on it.

I pulled the valve cover and it actually looks really good. Pulling the clutch and pan are good ideas too, and I can go ahead and pull the top end part if I need. No luck with soaking and trying the sprocket nut. 

And thanks all, it does shift OK - and rolls fine in neutral...the search continues....
