1977 KZ1000 Restomod

Before I sent my KZ750 frame out for powder coat, I spent almost two hours going over all the left over weld spatter from the factory welding.  I found some MIG wire hanging off some places, too.  Since I had just finished adding several gussets and such, it was a good time to do a full clean up.  Mama Kaw should have worn her glasses under the weld hood...

Funny you should say that, I'm having a shit of a time trying to see what I'm doing. I'm quite short sighted but as I get older things up close aren't that easy to deal with either! Glasses don't do the trick, looking over them is OK but I have to get really close which isn't always possible. Best deal I have at the moment is putting in my contacts and using the reading glasses my wife got as a gag gift a while back   Last time I was at the optician I got the choice of contacts with decent vision in the distance and OK reading, or contacts with perfect long distance vision and a set of reading glasses - probably should have chosen the latter.

Anyway, back to the bike: taking the frame off to get welded on the 10th. Just need to stiffen up the drilling jig for the shck mounts so it will be stable enough for welding.

My eye sight is crap too, I find using a bright led torch helps, I use one with a magnetic base so I can point it at what i'm doing, I'd be lost without it. I also bought a slightly more powerful set of glasses. they're great for focusing on what I want to do but if i look up its like a bad acid trip, very disorientating....!!!

+2.0 magnifiers under the weld hood baby!!!  I have to use them for anything closer than 2', or low light.

I feel your pain, I got my first reading glasses the same year as my first grandson- getting old’s a bitch !

So I got a cheap pair of +2's and a 2000 Lumen LED light. Made welding a LOT easier. I got the rest of the frame tacked up this week and took it off to get welded on Friday. It will be ready before Christmas so I can work on the seat pan and the electronics tray over the holidays.

First step is admitting. I have readers stashed in my car, work bench, night stand, coffee table. I gave in a few years ago. 

I guess after 40 years with -5.0 to -7.5 specs, I didn't want to admit that I needed reading glasses as well... at least my selective hearing is still working

It's not just our bikes that need maintenance Lol !

Here are some photos of the frame when I took it to get welded. I reinforced the jig and added some tubing to fit over the shock mounts.

 

 

 

Looking good, can’t wait to get started on mine. Progress has stopped before I got started due to a turbo blow up on my car (diesel-nothing exciting but very costly) at the weekend!!

Got the frame back. The welding is OK - he didn't put too much heat into the joins and, most importantly, it'll get through the MOT. Got the garage tidied up (sort of) and I'll start working on the seat pan and a tray for the electrics over the holidays.
