I just pick up this 81 kz1100, pay $750 for it. My idea is to convert it to a cafe race. Bike only has 18k miles

This is my first project ever so I will be asking a lot of question hahahaha

Missing the gas tank, no sure if I should get the stock or something else, any suggestions is welcome

If you click "insert all" when posting photos they will show up in full size instead of tiny thrumbnails.

Good luck with your project. It's a tall order to turn a heavy 1100 shafty into a cafe but what the heck. Just don't hack up that nice exhaust system.

Thank you for let me know about the pictures, got that fix.

I was thinking to get it up and running before I start doing any major changes

These bikes are too heavy to make an effective cafe out of. They're made for long hauls power and comfort. Better to restore to what was intended and buy a smaller bike to turn into a tight twisty street fighter. Then you'll have the best of both worlds. :woohoo:

So I just did a quick look to the bike after bringing her at home and I notice the oil is white, I hope that the water just come while I was transported.

The plan for right now it a good and deep wash, replace oil, get new battery, take carbs are see for any damage or deposits, once carbs are back the try to turn on the bike.

Question is: do I need to change the shaft oil too? If so what type of oil I need to use?

Also, regarding the white oil. Do you thing that it could have damage some inside the motor? Do I need to rebuild the motor now? Is there anything that I should look for it.

I'd drop the pan to see what kind of grunge is in there.

Yes, definitely change the rear gear case lube and service the drive shaft. It is wise to perform all of the routine maintenance since you have no idea if any of it was ever done.
On my Concours, I changed the gear case oil and did the drive shaft maintenance every time I changed the rear tire. That was more frequently than the service manual calls for, but it was easier to do them all at the same time.

This is for the A2, but the maintenance schedule should be the same as for your A1.

Water got into the egine somehow. Lots of running it without riding it will do that.
