Kiwi Z1R

On an only slightly related note...................I sold some GPZ750 parts on the weekend and dropped them off to their new owner. He had just finished his 1984 GPZ750 café racer custom. I really love checking out what other people have in their sheds!

Another one of those boxes that my wife keeps moaning about arrived today. Very stoked, got a bargain on a rear fender in really good nick from yahoo auctions in Japan. Still has the safety check sticker attached which made me doubly happy. The bike had the ugly Euro model long rear fender which are really really didn't like. Out with the old and in with the ................ur different old!

Looks mint on too..................okay so maybe it's only me that got excited by it. Couldn't understand why my wife was pissed off that I made her come out to the shed on a cold winters night to look at my new rear mudguard lol!

Went to rip out the bearings from the swingarm today so I can send it to get blasted and powder coated and found this set up. Brass bushes and no bearings? Can anyone enlighten me as to why? I have never come across this before.


I also hooked into the random parts that are going to make up my front forks. The forks that came on the bike aren't correct for a Z1R but they did have good stanchions. In one of my many contra deals I scored a set of correct Z1R forks but with buggered stanchions. Fingers crossed I was hoping that I could mix and match the two sets and end up with a working set.



Some bugger had fully muntered the caps on the set of my rolling chasis!


They also had the old cut off bit of pipe jammed down the top to compress the completely shagged fork springs to.


Cap on the left is correct for Z1R, one on the left is off and earlier (K)Zed.

PO's suck. My Z1 has brass swing arm bushings. Stock was steel. I put them in. The needle bearing kit was available but too expensive at the time.

earlier 900's used brass bushings but i thought they we're flanged hmm.

kinda looks like someone custom machined the setup you have.

that ol' arm has been worked over fairly well :whistle:

Mine were steel and sloppy. The bronze bushings were supposed to be an upgrade.

God bless Google, I had never realised the older Zed's had the solid bushes instead of bearings. This is the oldest bike I have worked on, I was only 4 when this Z1R entered the world! :woohoo: Thanks for the help guys.

While we are on a roll of pulling things to bits, I dismantled the carbs this afternoon. These are a set of 28mm and aren't 100% complete but I have a set of 26mm to rob any parts off. Just need to get them cleaned up and order some new gaskets etc.

Also had did abit more on the forks as well. Had to do some surgery to get the air screw out of one leg as the head was totally buggered.
