The spring was broken in the speedo. I took the guts from the other one and replaced it. PITA.
It works, I set the preload so it doesn't jump around as much but I'm sure this spring will fail too. I put in the new face plate and checked the speedo cable. It's spongy. The cable I got from Z1E two years ago. I'm going to order another one in a few days. I might disconnect it until then.

OK, I have a bit of a dilemma. Due to a handful of reasons I haven't gotten this bike running yet. The riding season is pretty much over except for in town and around the valley which isn't all that thrilling. I still plan to commute bike borne for as long as I can. The original plan was to get the 1k up and running as quickly as possible, go on few quick rides with my brother then use it as an alternate for GPz so I could do more extensive work and mild customization.

Now since I haven't got it running yet I'm not sure what to do. It was running, be it roughly, and licensed when I bought it so I was just planning to rebuild and balance the carbs, adjust the valves, tidy up a few small issues and be on my merry way. Currently it has only one rebuilt carb, valves that were within spec already and compression on the shady side of 100 psi and some nasty external cosmetic damage to the cylinder block and head. This has me contemplating just continuing to tear it down. I have already received a good cylinder block with matching pistons and I have a head on the way.

I've only ridden this bike around the block a handful of times. Therefore, the down side of continuing to tear it down is it might have issues I'm not aware of and I'll be putting in effort that might have to be backtracked or completely pointless. The upside is that it will be "fighting fit" next spring and can be confident in it for the season, unless again, there are hidden issues. If I just keep putting it back together it will be running and the compression will hopefully come back up with use. Then I can concentrate on the GPz. IF it does keep running decently, I will still have to eventually replace the cylinder block and head for solely cosmetic reasons at the least.

I'd go ahead and replace them and be done with it.

I'll post pics when I get a chance to spread stuff out. I have the cylinder block and pistons too. I'm going to prepare to split the engine completely down. No point tearing it half way down just to figure out I have something going in the crank case even if it's just a leaky seal.

I completely forgot that I'd posted this much on this thread!

I was only reminded of it because i was trying to find a thread I started about bike and helmet cams that seems to have disappeared. Oh well, no one seemed interested anyway.

So I've been in a complete slump on this bike. I started just taking things off about a month ago just because If I didn't make the point of it It would never get done. I got the complete top end apart a few weeks ago and it took until this morning to verify that the cam chain is within serviceable limits so i don't have to tear it down any further.... for now.

Here it is as of now.

So I guess I need to look at the rings on the pistons that came with my replacement cylinders to see if they need replacement. Does anyone have a good guide for evaluating them? They looked pretty good when I pulled them out of the box but i'm far from being an expert.

I guess I then need to order a set of gaskets and seals so i can get it back together. I hope nothing is too much of a pain. One thing I should mention is i bought a '78 head instead of a '79 because of the price and I hope that isn't going to be an issue.

OK so I went with swest's recommendations and loaded up my ebay shopping cart with his gasket guy's stuff. I just need to get the money from my brother to buy them. I don't see a one piece head gasket option so I guess i'll get it from him as well.

I do need an ignition timing housing and cover. Some PO had an over-sized mismatched aftermarket cover forced on to it, The mismatched screws were bent to get it to seat. Since the threads are probably toast I want to get the whole thing. At least it's a separate piece on these engines. So the quest begins.
