No GT750 shaft drives please, the thread is being derailed again now :laugh:

The Germans really seem to like them, ugly old things imo. But the Huns have funny tastes in bikes...

The examiner was riding one when I did my motorcycle full licence back in the 90's , says it all really. But a big selling bike among despatch riders looking to mount a topbox on the back.

Putting the two pics together really confirms the iconic styling of the GPz R1 , arguably even prettier than the 550 and the 1100's. The stronger frame gives better handling then the 550 imo and the reduced wheelbase and weight makes it 'flickier' than the 1100. The 1100 seems more stable at 3 digit mph speeds.

Tyrell you must have suffered some traumatic event with UK depesh riders, the way you shy the GT. Shure it's not my pick either but I kind of like the livery.

I can se that you are in the best of company there, love the 650 with the Rickman fairing :woohoo:

Otherwise doing my best even though progress has been slow this spring/summer as my daily ride, aka "the ebola bike" has taken up all my time just to keep it running. But I got goodies today, a Renthal superbike bar that rises the spirit to get in the shop to get some work done.
It matches the fairing perfect B)

There has been progress this winter and will report on it later. Right now I am trying to fit GSX 1400 Bandit 4 pot Nissin Calipers on a Zephyr 750 fork, running a ZR-7 front wheel with ZXR400L 310mm brake rotors.





Sound easy? Yeah Right!

I would probably had chosen another route if had known what I know now. :pinch:

Ok caliper mount cc on the Zephyr fork is 55mm, the Nissin mounts are 90mm cc.
There is not much space between the rotor and fork leg, ca 6 mm on each side. Not enough to fit a bracket on the inside if I want to secure it with a nut (I could probably mill off 5mm of the inside of the fork leg mount without losing integrity, but the Nissin caliper mount holes are treaded and want’s the bracket to go on the outside)

So the bracket has to go on the outside of the caliper mount on the fork leg and outside of the caliper. The Zephyr caliper mounts are of course countersunk.



So inspired by DoctoRot and Leon’s ideas in DoctoRot’s Saving a 750 Twin, maybe I could fix the fork in the mill and shave of the countersunk holes, fab an outside bracket to fixate the caliper with.

Tried to find something to make a template of and found some packing plywood lying around in the snow. Wet, cheap plywood is probably not the easiest material to make a template of but it had to go.

Sure, a bit crude



And fitted it might work, even though the bracket doesn’t line up on the fork leg because of the countersunk.



Milling down the countersunk will move he bracket 7 mm closer to the rotor and if I use 8mm 6061 Alu sheet I need to fit two 5-7mm spacers between the bracket and the caliper in order to center the caliper correctly over the rotor.

Or does anybody have any other ideas? :blink:

Guess you guys been worried, but all that happened in Sweden last Friday was me visiting the local mechanics shop and they help me mill down the countersunk caliper mounts, so that I can start detailing the caliper brackets. I could never in my life think that it would ignite such a diplomatic controversy. :lol: :lol:



Any how my local shop is a nifty little place, you have probably seen some of their works as their specialty is CNC lathe manufacturing and they some of the really cool stuff for Öhlin’s.

Ok so it was time to finalize the cush hub.

The original rear wheel has 90mm sprocket offset (center rim- center sprocket), the ZXR400 wheel 108mm. The 3/8 offset sprocket gives us approx. 9,5mm.



So let’s mount this baby on the dub we made earlier, a couple minutes in the freezer and greased up with some Winter ale the cush drive slides on like a charm.



Put it on lathe and 108-9,5 = 98,5 mm 8,5 mm has to go.



Heat the cush drive to get the dub out.



Mount and check the line-up, we did' nt have a laser so we had to do with lager.



One happy camper! :)

It all looked so simple when Dr Root posted the templates he made in Acrylic plastic for his brake caliper bracket, so I tried out the same route. Darn it’s hard to figure out where the caliper shall go in reference to the fork leg.



After playing around with the plastic and producing serious amount of shattered glass.:blink:



It actually started to look like something that could be tried on and the position of the caliper could be decided.



So with a template of plexi I went home and sought the support of my seventeen year old daughter who’s in a technical college. Within a few minutes she had sketched up just what I need. Damn I like that girl!



So with the CAD drawing on a USB memory and a sheet of 6mm 6061 Aluminium I went to another fancy shop around the corner that sports a water cutting machine this Monday.
This morning I went by and picked up the result, bad ass can’t wait until Saturday when I can go to Erik’s garage and try them on.:woohoo: :woohoo:
