OK. I pulled the wheel from the Bandit today and tried it and it looks pretty good. The 3 spoke mag design fits with the ZX9r front good enough.

But I dont see how I can get it to work. The swingarm is centered in the frame (so the twin shocks will line up)
and the wheel is centered in the swingarm ( Itll need a fair bit whacked off the sprocket carrier to do this)
So you would think that the back end would line up nicely with the rest of the bike.
Not so.
Swingarm and wheel lined up

Sprocket carrier will need a shave

Nothing lines up with the overall centerline

Back to the drawing board then.
First, I reckon I should check the frame and be very sure its not bent .Im pretty sure its not but Ill check it anyway.
Then there are 2 possibilities. Either Im going in the wrong direction here ,with the GS1100 swingarm ,and this is never going to work.
Or, Im missing something.
This is the first time Ive done this and Im just making it up as I go along. I have NO IDEA what Im doing !
I am staying positive though and Im confident that itll all work out.,I just need to get past this back end issue.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The tire center-lines need not overlap.

Sprockets should be perfectly aligned.

The wheel may be situated in the swing-arm closer to one side than the other in order to align the sprockets.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks Patton. Ive seen this diagram before. The sproket part,I get, that makes sense but the wheel alignment doesnt.
Where did you get this from? Can you post any links to more detailed info?

Some HD's come from the factory about 3/8ths to 1/2 inch off center. From what I have rea it is no big deal but it bothers some people! Note that this is different than alignment.

the VLX 600 wheels are not in the same plane. They rear runs parallel but about 3/4" to 7/8" off to the side

Heres how it stands at the moment. Original forks ,swingarm and wheels.

Anyone whos looked into a swingarm swap on this website will recognize the GS1100 Swingarm.
[attachment:2]DSC04444.JPG[/attachment

Though from what Ive read, Fitting in the frame is a simple matter of spacing with a couple of washers. Its going to take a bit more than a couple of washers to fill this. The CSR frame must be wider at the pivot bolt than the other
900/1000 frames. Be aware.

Also The GS1100 should be 1 1/2 to 2 inches (3.5 to 5.0cm) longer than the standard swingarm. Not so with the CSR. Im measuring original swingarm at 46cm (18.1 inch)

and the GS1100 swingarmat 47cm (18.5)

Which is good news as it'll mean I wont lose any height at the back end.Though I will still need to change the shocks as the mounts are different.

I had the same problem with spacing the swingarm on my 78 KZ1000 frame till z1wiz told me how he did it.
He gave me 2 of the thick flat washers that are used on the top of the KZ triple trees.
I slid one on each side and was done. They fit perfect.
Looks like you need the swingarm dust covers and thrust washers also?
The dust cover part number is. 61262-49201 (82-83 SUZ GS1100 swingarm)
I don't have the thrust washers part number though.

Spdygon, youre right about the 180 in the swingarm .I know the GS1100 was made for a 140 but I reckon I might be able to fit a 160 into it without too much hassle.

So the search is on for a rear wheel that'll take a 17x160 tire. Im looking for something that'll match with the 3 spoke front ('95 ZX9R) . So far Ive come up with the 650 Bandit, the FZR 600R(94/95) and the ZX6R(95/96).
If anybody has any other ideas, please let me know. Im stalled until I can get this sorted.

(Something that takes a 20mm axle would be good)

Thanks bro! I think you can get by with a bit of offset in the front and rear wheel centerline, but I personally would try to get it as close as possible. Assemble it without spacers at the swing arm and wheel. Have the shocks bolted up. Align the sprockets and then build your spacers. Set the fore and aft of the wheel a bit forward of centered in the axle hole.

OK,thanks for all the input. Its a lot to think about.
An offset backend is something I want to avoid if at all possible.Im going to go through this step by step and see what I can come up with.
First thing was to check that the frame is ok,so I lined it up on the worktable and hung some plum lines. One from the underside of the central down tube , as far forward as I could get,One from midway on the crossbrace that holds the centerstand and one from the loop at the back of the frame. Then I put a spirit level across the frame in the seat area and got everything sitting good.It all looks fine with nothing out of whack.
I also laid out the GS1100 swingarm on the bench and marked out a centerline on that to check for any problems.
Eveything looks good with that also. Its very square with no offset. The shock mounts, axle carriers and pivot area all line up nice and tidy.

I know that the Bandit600 wheel will physically fit but wont center up it has to move way too far over to the left.
So,that means,I need a different swingarm.One for a bigger wheel
(As Spdygon already said,The GS1100 takes a 140 wheel)
If I was keeping the original CSR wheel the GS1100 arm would be great,a very easy swap, but for a chunkier back wheel, its not going to work.
So starts the search for another swingarm.
SRAD? Zephyr?
Any ideas?

P.S. Once I get this sorted Ill be putting the GS1100 swingarm in the classifieds along with a whole load of CSR stuff
if anyone is interested. I also have the GSXR750/1100 back wheel that i tried first,

97-03 gsxr 600 (no upper brace)
92 gsxr 1100 (no upper or lower brace)
those should install much like the gs arm.

these will take some modification but have been used on kz's in the past (and present)

99-07 busa needs upper brace removed(possibly lower brace added)
03-04 zx6/636 needs the pivot machined narrower
01-05 fz1 needs the pivot machined narrower

these will all need shock brackets added for dual shocks if thats what you want.
i'm sure there are others but these have all been used on kz's in the past.

what you have to watch is that the pivot doesn't get to wide to where it can't be machined down to narrow it.

New swingarm arrived. GSXR 600 (2001-2003) Got it straight into the frame to check whats what.
First thing is as Leon says, fits right in the same as the GS1100.The same couple of spacers are needed to take up the side to side movement.

Thats where the similarities end.The pivot tube is a bigger diameter than the CSR bolt,so ill need some kind of sleeve to sort that out.

The 600 must also have a fatter rear axle than the CSR and GS1100 so Ill have to figure out the back wheel/brake mount, etc

Next thing is the footrest/exhaust hangers are in the way and stop the arm from lifting up

So,I whacked them off with the angle grinder. It was pretty easy, rather than cut them ,I just ground the weld back and they dropped off,no problem.

The 180 tyre now fits in just peachy ,though theres still the chain alignment to figure out.I might still just go with a 150 or 160.Im not sure yet. At least I can center the wheel which makes me feel better.
I know a lot of people are happy with an offset wheel but mine was so far out I could have fitted a sidecar on it.

So,the first thing to do now is get the arm mounted properly in the frame. Going to see the 'Lathe man' tomorrow about some kind of sleeve/spacer type thing.
