CSR1000 Project Build

OK boys and girls. A big day today. I finished welding the frame (a couple of tabs to hold the new seat pan down,sorry no photo of that) and I finally got it painted!!





Not totally happy with it though.For some reason,I got bubbles in places !!? Dont know what thats all about.


But to be honest , Im beyond caring. Its painted, Its close enough.
Once its cured I can tidy it up and start reassembly.

Feels good doesn't it! Congrats on making it this far. Lots of work I am sure! Definitely been enjoying following this thread. Keep up the awesome work. Could always sand down that bubble area and respray afterwards? How long of a cure time do you have and what paint have you used?

Thanks Jbosh. The paint is only smooth Hammerite and its pretty crap. I dont know what theyve done to it , it used to be great.Easy to apply and covering well but now,I dont know. Im pretty sure theyve changed it in line with enviromental regs,which is fair enough, except that now its crap. Cure time is 6 weeks!!!,so bollocks to that. The engine is going in as soon as possible .
I want to build it up as is and get it running. If alls well I can break it down later and go for powder coat.

Just sharing an idea with you but I've been introduced to VHT's varieties of paints. I've been very impressed though it will require a second coat. The chemical resistance and long term durability is what I was after. Cure time is 7 days . I've never heard of hammerite until your mention now! I'm assuming that the hammerite is spray can applied? I need to learn more about this powder coating thing, Here is hoping you are able to get the engine in as soon as you can!

Hammerite has been around for yonks here in europe.Spray can or brush on, Paint on over anything with no primer and little prep.Used for garden furniture and other outdoor metalwork.It started out with a hammer effect finish (heavy orange peel to you and me) and then they introduced a smooth finish,sometimes called 'smoothrite'.

If you do prep properly,you can get a good looking and relatively durable finish.Like with any paint. Though like I said earlier,they seem to have changed the formula and it is not as easy to apply as it used to be, The finish is not as consistant and the durability is??? we will see!
For motorbike frames,Its basicly a poor mans paint job.
For me,on this build,its pefect. I dont see me being on the road this summer but if I can get the bike built up,I can tinker with it over the winter,get it running and set up. Then next summer itll be ready to roll. After that,if everything is ok.If the welding has held up and I dont need to redo anything,I can pull it apart and get it powder coated.Or if the paint holds up,I can leave it as is.
There are many people who will poo poo it and say how crap it is and what a waste etc but If you dont have the money for powdercoating and you dont have the equipment or knowledge for 2pack painting, this is a good option.

Fingers crossed it dosnt all peel off in a couple of weeks

Thanks for your response to my question on hammerite! My VHT paint is also a no primer necessary and hard setting cheaper alternative to powder coating. At the end of the month, we all are still paying bills .

Yeah. No idea what that was all about but he/she certainly seems upset about something. A nice note to start the day on!!

Anyway,that aside,the frame is curing on the roof terrace at the minute.(out of the way of the neighbours) Were having some very warm weather here in between the thunder storms,so Im putting it out,bringing it in and putting it out again. Ive roped my mate into helping with getting the motor into the frame though weve got to coordinate a bit as we work different hours. Also,Ill have to get the Clymer and the parts diagram out and figure out what and where all the motor mounts are. I did powder coat the mounting plates and I remember buying a new long bolt for the rear mount as the old one was bent,I just have to root around and dig it all out.
Fingers crossed I can get it done this week.
