The last of the above. The hole is ready for drilling. I do have the original bolt somewhere but Im not sure exactly which one it is and dont want to risk drilling too deep. Just looking for the depth of the hole to be drilled. Simple as that;

Any help appreciated.

Please, pardon my ignorance, can you explain what is going on here with the sprocket cover, push rod? It looks cool as hell I just don't understand why or what is really going on... :S I want to learn though! :laugh:

Dont worry about it, I rarely understand whats going on.The plan here is to replace the standard cable operated clutch operator thing with an hydraulic one.
Something like this;

Unfortunately,this is not my bike.Its something I lifted from a magazine.

Hey! Is that an LTD youve got? Could you measure the depth on the hole i need? (as described in the previous photo)
Thanks.

I've got an 82 750ltd. It appears to be a little bit different than yours. I measured the hole depth and the top two were roughly 22mm.

You can see from the picture they are a bit different.

Bought some bits and bobs today to drill out the hole.A cheap drill with a hexagonal shank to fit a bit holder and an extra long bit holder.I took off the generator cover and was able to get at the hole.

I drilled about 10mm in and that was as far as I could go.I hit on something and didnt want to force it. I think the inserts are only about 10mm anyway. Ill pick up the kit tomorrow,if I can and see how it goes.

I think it was the sprocket bolt. I read somewhere that the front sprocket bolt coming loose was a common fault on these (J models ?) and a retaining clip was made available. I managed to get one from Zpower,though I dont know if Ill be able to use it with my new offset front sprocket.(when I get one)
Thats how it came to me. There is a piece riveted in and theres nothing leaking so it is all operational. I originaly planned to leave it like that as you dont see it with the cover on but now that Im going for the hydraulic clutch ,itll be more obvious. So im keeping my eye out for a replacement.

Got some stuff today. A nice insert set to fix the buggered threads on the engine. Good German quality.

and a (lesser quality) ratchet tap holder

So I just need to borrow a 90 degree head for my drill and I can get that hole rethreaded.

and thats not all.The posty came and brung me these;

STICKERS!!!!!!! ( I like stickers)

These were my consolation prize for losing out on a lovely Harris pipe on ebay. Apart from my brake hoses,S.S. brake pistons ,seals and chain and sprocket set, these are the only brand new things Ive actually bought for this project. Everything else has been 2nd hand so far.
Im well chuffed with them anyway.

Well I just finished a 2 day welding course. Had a go at a few different types of welding,some easier than others but I enjoyed it and learnt a lot. Confidence has been boosted and hole in frame has been closed. Still got to put a couple of tabs on the frame to fix the seat pan down and thats it for welding. Then itll be paint decision time.
