So you are basically shortening the seat and moving the tail forward? Or shortening both and moving the tail forward? I think with the seat reworked it could look good. The tail looks to stubby in your pic IMO and hangsover the rear tire to far in the other.

Wayne,

Basically the tail would get cut down the distance it would take to set the LED taillight directly off the back of the stock frame section. This is where the two 8mm bolts hold the plastic the the frame bracket directly behind the rubber fender mount. I think this would shorten things up by about 4" overall. The stock seat seems to overhang the sides and the tail too much for me, so going to have it stop without over hanging the tail which will appear to move it forward slightly, but in reality will be shortening it 2-3 inches. I would not be cutting the stock frame at all, just too be clear.

Leon,

That is fantastic, but out of my price range. I think you have inspired me to use a sacrificial tail and some fiberglass to make up my own. We'll see how it does....

That is what I tried to model mine after. There is another pic with measurements. I used them but felt it sat to far back so I shortened the front. All was well until I sat on it and discovered that shortening it moved the wider part forward so I the narrowed it. I am liking it now.

Wayne,

You got pics of your tail you made? I bought a used, repaired KZ900 tail in primer for $40 and will probable play around with it. I am considering just doing a custom seat and forgoing the tail modification. Really, I just want this bike ready to go this summer, and I have to stop adding stuff to do to it in order for that to happen!

Here are some pics. I dont have it here or I would send some with a tape laid against them. I think the tail is actually a bit longer than stock but it is moved forward more than stock I am not sure what I am ging to lay on it for a pad or seat yet. The last pis is to show the taill light position. It will be the same as on my 74. I laid mine up but if I were to do it again I would mod an existing tail.

That looks good Wayne. I think one key piece will be how the front of the seat pan will interface with the tank.

That could be an issue. My subframe is 1" higher than stock. I did that in hopes of getting an inch thick seat pad made that will hide the gap. I see alot od cafe builds where the gap in the bottom of the tank shows. Not my thing.

Do you think you could shorten the seat 3-5 inches and move the tail forward the same?

Yeah that is what I have been thinking. Right now my under tail I built has about 4" from the back of the frame to where my taillight mounts. So I figure I build the taillight mount into the frame, and move the tail section forward that amount. It will have to be cut, and a new rear mount bonded in, along with new forward mounts that will be purely custom. The molded top mounts that go vertical into the seat brace will not be there once the tail is cut.
