That might work, but I am going to wait and see if my extra pulley will work better. It has a full hub and only a 10mm hole all the way through. I think I can bore a straight 1" pocket into it and trim the excess. This will allow for belt alignment and with it being a pocket and not a through hole, it will keep the pulley from moving side to side without having any other shaft machined feature such as a shoulder.

out of curiosity have you checked someone like

www.sdp-si.com/eStore/CoverPg/Drive_Components.htm

to see if there are any off the shelf solutions?

Leon,

I have spent more time diggin' through that site than I probable should have! Too many things that "I need" to have! Yep, nothing that is "off the shelf" without some form of altering. The one I got off Fleabay was like $15 shipped, so no problems. I also compared it in weight to the one I have, and is the same wieght without me cutting on it, so it will be lighter.

to lock the pully you could machine a washer that has locking prongs that sit in the face surface of the pully and rotor end. just an option but id like to see it keyed. and i have seen small forklift alternators that might give you more carb space.

the best advice i can give is dont take dnthavakawmans advice..

The alternator is pretty small. I like is has 40 amp output and is permanent magnet style. Once my velocity stacks and the new carbs get here, I'll mock it up to make sure the clearance is adequate.

The lock washer idea is a good one, just wonder it it would hold enough during accel/decel.

So I just thought I would post up my new project aspect.... So I messed up and bought a set of Kawasaki Zephyr 1100 wheels for my project. They are hard to find and I like the look. All was good until I found out the front is an 18" wheel. I want 17's....

I then realized, this bike MUST have what I have lusted over since Ducati released the GT1000 Classic...Wire Wheels. Spokes in 17"ers with modern, wide rubber is the look. So I need to start somewhere since nothing is really available to do this. I took a hint from a buddy, and started looking at Harley Davidson hubs. They are standard with their bolt patterns, axle sizes, and are symmetrical in appearance which should make them easy to adapt.

Unfortunately, there are three sizes of hubs - Narrow, Standard, And Wide. HD stuff is great as there is plenty of aftermarket support, but NO ONE EVER states the dimensions. So I bought three of them off EBay and will start to make them work.

First thing I notices, the rotor to hub bolt pattern matches! They are off by a hair, probable due to the metric vs. SAE dimensions. I can make it work anyway. The Hub of the rotor vs. the hub center ring is about .100" difference in the OD. I can make that work.

So measuring off my ZRX, it looks like this hub, w/ rotors are about .508" inches too wide. The narrow hub which is still on its way, I think is 1" narrow overall, which means I need .441" spacers...but we'll see.....

It looks like the hub has enough meat in it to notch it for the speedo drive ring. I am looking at rims, and I am wondering if I can get away with a 3" front and a 6" rear rim as those are the two cheapest sizes in a 17" for these hubs. If not, it will cost me about $700 in just hoops from Excel! I am excited about this.

Last question I have for the group, how crucial do you think a cush drive is? I will have to design and machine my own, or I can just get a sprocket that bolts directly to the hub like most Harleys... Any comments on this? To cush or not to cush is the question.....

Oh I completely understand why it is there and it's purpose. I would be more certain of its need if this engine had the power pulse signature of a v twin. It would be cleaner and simpler if I didn't have to machine one....

Interesting article on cush drives...sounds like it might be a good idea to have one. After all, you don't want too much "snatchiness", do you? Come to think of it, maybe you do?? :P

how much do you plan to ride the bike cory?
if i planned to ride it a lot i would want the cush drive.
if it was a round town bike i might forgo it and see how it acts, and then decide.
