I know it's probably just a batch job, but my #4 spark plug wire on my 77' KZ1000A is a little short in length. Even routing it the shortest way to the new angled spark plug cap I have, the wire just allows the cap to screw into it. Not banjo string tight but hardly any play with the wire.

A cheap and easy way to repair this I think, would be using a short sharpened finishing nail and driving one side into the stock wire leaving the coil about an inch from the coil. Then attach a new section of solid core copper wire to other side of the finishing nail in the additional length that I need. Then use some shrink wrap to insulate the joining wire ends.

Good idea or Bad idea ? :) :(

Or is using the NGK spark plug wire splice better ?

I think you mean " swap coil locations " to see if that will give me a little more spark plug wire length ? Or do you mean "replace " the coil that has the shorter spark plug wire ?

I meant to see if the wires will reach it the coils are on the other side. I have a set some moron cut so they would only fit one way. I was planning on replacing the wires. That meant I would pull out the old ones and Epoxy the new wires in. It would work but I got a new set.

Steve, I was going to try and switch the coils tomorrow and see if #4 wire which is too short would work better mounted on the right side of the frame backbone instead of the left where it's at now ?

Or I guess I could look at the electrical diagram and see if I could leave the coils where that at now and just switch the bullet connectors ?

NGK sells wire spice thingies for the ignition leads.

You can pull the wires out of the coils too. There is a spike thing down on the bottom of the socket that the wire fits down into. If the wire tears you can use a pick tool and dig the old wire out. When installing new wires use WD-40 and shove the wire in good and hard to make sure the spike thing penetrates into the new wire.

What you want to know!!!
Yes! You can splice spark plug wires. I have did this plenty of times in the 70's and 80's.
I was too cheap to buy good items! So, the Muscle Car Guys always had Accel wires. I always took the short cut off's.
So, I would splice into the stock oem coil. I soldered the wire. A small piece of shrink tube! Then I wrapped 3M electric tape around it.
I still had points. It worked fine for years!
I looked cool! with my yellow Accel wires & orange plug boots!
This is what I did! And it worked! For Years!
Livin in "CheektaVegas, NY
Went thru 25 of these in 40 yrs.
I SOLD OUT! THE KAW BARN IS EMPTY.
More room for The Old Girl, Harley 75 FLH Electra Glide,
Old faithful! Points ign. Bendix Orig. carb.
Starts everytime!

If he has the stock coils, the spark plug wires are molded into the coils.

edit: I did not know they could be pulled out. never saw that before. doh.

They are glued in. They will come out and new wires put in with epoxy. I have three sets of 30-40 year old coils. I saw no value in fixing old coils so I got new ones.

I pulled my wires outta the stock coils and pushed in yellow copper cores for a while too before I bought the Dyna's. Maybe measure the depth and mark em so your sure they are bottomed out.

What do you Guys think of the idea using a finishing nail sharpened on both ends and using that to connect the wires as I suggested earlier in this Post? At least you wouldn't have to dig out the wire that goes into the coil.

The NGK splice looks good. Has anyone used one with good success ? Would this splice add anymore additional resistance in the system ?
