All of the bench setting went smooth. hooked up an auxiliary tank and it fired right up after sitting for 20 plus years, was sweet the hear it running again. Still working on front MC rebuild and waiting on push/pull cables so it hasn't been road tested yet. Synchronized carbs.... #1,#2,and #4 pretty stable but #3 seems erratic. will sit level with others for a few seconds after cracking the throttle but after letting it idle at the 1500 rpm to sync at #3 starts to drop below and then rise above the other 3. Hopefully I'm explaining this correctly wont sit stable... any ideas???

One carb is often fixed. You set the others to it. You adjust the valves before you sync the carbs.

Well then learning as I go. Sync'd by adjusting the tallest column #4 first down close to the others, then adjusted as needed others till they were at the same level. if that was wrong hopefully its close enough for now till I get valves adjusted. I can work on that while front MC is soaking. Thanks for the advise.

Mikaw wrote: I'm looking for advise on main and pilot jet size. I have rebuilt the carbs and they are on the bench waiting to go back on the bike along with new manifolds. 25 years ago i remember this bike just not having the punch i thought it should have, its a bone stock '78 LTD 1000 engine with a 4 to 1 header and pods. Main jets are 105 and pilots are 15. I don't know the needle setting. My question is, should I, while they are on the bench replace the main and pilot jets.

Question 2). I know the answer to the next question about how to change the needle location (if needed), its gonna be get a FSM. At this point i don't have one so if someone would share the process I'd be very thankful.

If you haven't found or obtained a FSM, I have downloaded pdf's from this site at no cost. If someone else has steered you in a similar direction then please disregard. Only sending a tip for your info because that's how I obtained it too. I'm quite sure there are other places and sites to get the same info but this one worked fine for me and trouble-free (and it was the KHI version). Also, public libraries are a great place for finding reference manuals of all kinds when needed.

www.zedrider.co.uk/service--owners-manuals.html

...then look for this tab. ..(Z1000 A2 & Mk II & Z1-R D3 1978-80 Kawasaki Service Manual)...You may find it helpful as it covers '78 KZ1000 engine info.
