I'm looking for advise on main and pilot jet size. I have rebuilt the carbs and they are on the bench waiting to go back on the bike along with new manifolds. 25 years ago i remember this bike just not having the punch i thought it should have, its a bone stock '78 LTD 1000 engine with a 4 to 1 header and pods. Main jets are 105 and pilots are 15. I don't know the needle setting. My question is, should I, while they are on the bench replace the main and pilot jets.

Question 2). I know the answer to the next question about how to change the needle location (if needed), its gonna be get a FSM. At this point i don't have one so if someone would share the process I'd be very thankful.

You might try 117.5 mains and 17,5 pilots.

No disrespect Steve but I just had another suggestion from a well know carb guy and he suggested 122.5 min and leave the #15 pilot as is till the bike gets a shake down run. Your thoughts? I ask because I'd like to compare your suggestion to others. AKA pick your brain

As suggested by the title of this thread, stock jetting will not work with your setup. The exact jetting you need will require a bit trial and error. The two suggestions posted above are perfectly reasonable places to start. Pick one and give it a try. You may want to put Jets r Us on speed dial.

P.S. if you are using Emgo or Chinese filters, you might as well sign up for therapy now, because they will block the air intakes in the mouth of the carbs.

Yep I have already noticed that. Is it OK to cut the inner lip of the boot to clear the ports? Came with the cheepies and going to give them a try. Money is budgeted for other item right now. If they give me migraines Ill pop for real K&N :S

i was thinking the 78' KZ1000 used the same 26mm carbs my 77' has but a different needle and with leaner factory jetting?
Regardless. .., 117.5 to 120 mains and 17.5 pilot jets sounds close to me too. Especially if you are under 3500' mean sea level.

Possibly. If you can assure a very smooth path for the air, they could work. If there is a sharp or rough transition in front of those ports, there may be too much turbulence for them to work as designed.
APE sells some high quality filters for less tha k&N.

OK, I don't see any issues with the boots blocking the air intakes but I wanted to ask the experts. I tried my best to not skew the angle of the photo to give a true representation of them
