Hello all. I have my new project! A few pics below. This has been inoperative for 10 years. It's all there and actually looks better than the pics to me. Gas tank clean engine is free, brakes all work, rolls well. Very excited. First thing is a chemtool bath for the 28mm Mikuni pumpers.

My buddy has a 79 ST with pods and a 4-1 kerker. I believe the 79 still had the MKII engine as well...at any rate, he took the bags and fairing off and that thing kinda scared me a little bit...lol.

Wow, I like the boxes but I'd ditch the wind jammer. Nice bike.

My thought too Steve. Got the carbs off. Assorted broken bits so far - air box snap on top, seat lock (no key forced open by PO), also has a K&N air filter, and very varnished carbs. I put a few pics below. Never worked on 28mm pumper before. The floats are varnished that they stick in position. The entire carb slides/rod is gummed up and slow to close (no snap back at all). Also have no idea what the little ball bearing and small brass rod are for but they were laying in the bowl. I know chemtool dip is in order, but need some advice on cleaning. Also I have the FSM on the way and will pause til I have it, but didn't think the cleaning was rocket science. I will pause until I know more. Boy the carbs come out like a picnic compared to the 550. Anyway, the process begins. This one's gonna take some time. R

A few cans of carb spray should free them up. The ball bearing and rod is the check valve for the accelerator pump. The ball should be in the bottom of the shaft with the pin above it. Welcome to the liter club. B)

Congrats on the new bike, looks like quite a bit of work but a very fun project and should be hella rewarding! Lots and lots of work ahead, I do like the bags as Steve and you said, but agree need to remove that ugly Windjammer and I would also say the sissy bar as well.

As for the carbs, if you have access to one use an ultrasonic cleaner they works beautifully and makes it so easy and does a really nice job, that is what I used and wouldn't do without it if I had the choice. For the rod and ball bearings, most likely that sounds like the choke slide rod, and the ball bearings (assuming they are very small) are to be put inside of the tiny tube opening in the carbs behind the place where the choke rod slides through the carbs to act as a detent so that when you pull the choke rod in or out it stops at certain points like full out or halfway out etc. Doubt I am saying this eloquently and hope I don't mangle it too bad, but that sounds like what you are describing. Pictures of the culprits would help.

Well, without manual in hand yet, I am doing things that don't need much research. Vetter off, Gotta find a nacelle for the headlight, the Vetter doesn't have the cover just the headlight. Happy to see the brackets were tucked under the fairing. General wiring is good, but any where the vetter was hooked up was roached. Main loom looks good. Dyna 3.0 ohm coils. I am gonna test the wires and caps. Somebody butchered the left coil bracket for some reason. The wiring to the coils is not to my standard. Will replace at some point. Hopefully the coils are good. Pulled the valve cover. The valve train was oiled and it appears to be in time correctly, but again no manual. With the plugs loosened it's passing compression. Gonna got get a gallon of carb dip and some spray to clean up carbs and jets. What tubing is needed connecting between carb bowls. Looks like 1/4" fuel line? I will search for valve clearances and measuring procedure. It's open so this is the time. A few pics.

Well carb cleaning was going fine until I see that PO has epoxied the carb tops on. What f&^*(#ng 89ickhead!!!. How to defeat epoxy? Will Chemdip do it? I think I will ungang em and dip whole carb top too. I did some light tapping but no go. Any thoughts? These are grungy. I have only located two brass rods and one small ball (not the choke tubes the little ones for the check valve on accel pump i think) and A cpl pics. R
