Hello all,

Well I notice some oil on the garage floor. The leak is coming from the ignition cover. This area was very rusted and I cleaned it out. My question is can the seal be replaced without splitting cases. It's late and dark but I got some picture. I didn't pull the advancer, but it certainly looks like the main seal there is leaking down and collecting in the cover until it weeps out. Any reason for oil to be there?
Just a few drops maybe a teaspoon on the floor. The oil is fresh now. Would an overfill cause this?

Any input appreciated.

R

I think you have to split the cases to do them. Is your spark advance dry. It looks like it.
Pics upside down? Cell phone pics?

It's dry and they were cellphone pics, but uploaded on the pc, go figure. The manual is pretty limited on this seal it has two paragraphs. I'll keep reading. What ya think of sealant there? Probably leaks on the shaft not the case though eh?. It is only weeping downward. Fudge hardly worth a full split, it runs very well.

Too bad you can't install a hose a direct that oil onto the chain... just kidding :)
Maybe a vacuum hose to suck it into the exhaust?

Loudhvx - maybe :P Do the cases have to be split? It's leaking from the case edge not the shaft. Maybe sealant? It looks like the seal is external. Vid coming, here's a few pics. Well I was lloking for a reason to paint the engine :S

If I remember correctly, there was a lot of rust in there. The seal may have been damaged by the rust. It might stop after some good long rides. If not, I'd live with it until the time comes to split the cases.

Yes there was a lot in there. I am still thinking a hi temp RTV will do the trick. I ordered the seal to see exactly what it looks like - if there is an in lip etc. I have seen some stuff about they are installed on the crank and then in the case due to an inner lip, but that can be trimmed and installed with some sealer. We'll see. It will take a while for the vid to be hi res but here is a better view. Let it perk a bit.

The lip is on the outside of the cases. Trying to drive in a new seal could destroy it. Maybe with three bond or the like it might seal but I'd be concerned of it working itself out. You need to keep the advancer lubricated. It has to be able to turn freely and not get scored. The springs need lube too. I use grease on the rotor and spray some lube on the springs and arm pivots from time to time.

Yep, it's fricking double lipped, installed when setting the crank in the upper half to the connecting rods. Not doing that yet. Will try some kind of oil resistant sealer. It is not leaking from the shaft...yet and there is not as much oil pressure there as in an oil passage. It will work, but may have to be repeated over time. Will monitor oil consumption and keep track. Suppose it's better to take apart before it gets destroyed. Glad I didn't pay for this bike. :P
