If there's too much drag it will spin the starter and you will hear the starter whining.
You shouldn't have to resort to going that far though if you use your judgement now while the cover is off.
If you can move the starter clutch gear anti clockwise by hand with fairly light pressure it is ok.
If it is very hard to move or locks solid when the rotor bolt is tightened then you need to reduce the thickness.
The damper is only there to keep the starter gear from floating about too much and rattling.

thanks everyone! I think it's probably fine the way it is. It just bugs me a bit. Dumb design. It's robbing precious power too  well a really tiny bit anyway.

Well it's been a year and a half since my last post. Is anyone still interested in my project? It's been on hold due to many major life changes, but I've finally worked on it again.

A couple months ago I started it up for the first time!! Here's a video of it running.

Since shooting the video I have finished assembling 99% of the mechanical stuff and started prepping the body parts for paint. No pics yet, but coming.

I checked for resistance in all the wires on the harness and replaced some connectors. Mostly it was all still OK.
What is this thing? It looks fried. It's on the wiring harness under the tank. Think I should replace it?

I felt like no-talent hack after that...

I found out I could not make sharp points with the fine line tape. So I stuck regular tape to a piece of glass and traced the shape on it, Then cut with razor blade and ruler. This worked well except the transition from the fine line tape to regular tape was a bit tricky.

I have no idea if a pro would do it this way. Just makin it up as I go along
I painted several cars and motorcycles about 25 yrs ago and was able to do nice work. As I work on this I realized I forgot a lot of little tricks and re-learned them the hard way :(
The modern paint materials cost WAAYY more than back then, so oops I made a mistake and there goes $50. Oops another... etc. Very annoying. I spent about $240ish on materials for this one bike. I used to be able to do 2 whole cars for that! Damn EPA and their overbearing regulations
