:woohoo: The tire store airgun did it. you can see the problem area. What the heck caused that? rust? Just like it was welded.

Now I can finally look into getting the crank welded.

I noticed the end has no woodruff key... I bought one that was in the parts diagram...

Oil pump checks out OK. Found a bit of sludge, but very little. Clearances are good. The Vesrah "complete" gasket kit does NOT have an oil pump gasket...

Look at all the purty parts! I'm using really coarse media that leaves a texture. This iron colored paint makes a totally cool look on that IMHO.

BTW - I bought a bearing from APE instead of using the odd one I had. Interesting price differences: APE $30, Bikebandit $82, Local bearing house $53.

that is normal.
there used to be 2 dif thicknesses of gaskets available for the pump.if your clearance was loose , the thinner 1 would give tighter clearances and therefore more pump pressure. some guys would make up new 1's even thinner. u must be careful checking the clearance though. the manual says to use plastigauge, but that stuff can actually bow the cover and distort the measurement.so u need to make sure it doesnt bind if u change to a thinner gasket.i bought a few dif pumps and mix and matched the parts to get tighter gear , and wall, clearances.

THanks Mark. I called some autoparts stores and noone seems to carry gasket material that .006 thick (I measured the one I took out). It's all thicker. Where do I get the stuff? I should just order an OEM one I suppose.

I imagine the goal is simply to make the clearance as small as possible. As it heats up the clearance probably increases because the aluminum body will expand more than the steel gears.

Heck, if the clearance is too tight it will probably grind of a bit of aluminum right away quick and then be as tight as possible! It certainly won't seize, as it's driven by that big gear right off the crank.

check with the dealer and see what size /thickness they have. when i got 1 a few years ago it was the thinner 1.

Well my crank is still at the machine shop being welded and trued. While I wait I started cleaning up the wheels to paint them. BUT My bloody compressor just died... Dunno what's wrong yet. It just won't go on. As if the power is dead. Power is good, but it don't work!! The most important tool in the shop is down, so I guess I have to work on that now instead of the bike dangit.

Busted Fuse? Isn't that always the case, the one tool you plan to use, and the only one you need to use for the work you plan to do, and it goes kaput! Sorry mate. Hope it's an easy fix.
