Here's something to check out if you have a few minutes and really care about considering this possible future:  EV Road Trip
Not as convenient as what we're used to driving, but with these factors in mind (high-output chargers and cars capable of taking that much power so quickly) it wouldn't be that bad. Goes without saying that it's dependent on infrastructure and for many of us it isn't feasible - but maybe in 13 years (as if the government has ever stuck to a schedule) there'll be fast chargers at every podunk gas station too. 

Not that I plan to ever buy a new car in the first place. 

Video is somewhat misleading. They claim $93.00 in charge fees. Using the average $.40 per kWh times the claimed 328 kWh used that’s more like $132.00. Now they did use the standard charger on the last charge so that will reduce the cost but I doubt it reduced it by $40.00 to get to their $93.00 expense. Let’s say their $93.00 is close, now add in at least $120.00 for a hotel stay and the more realistic cost is over $210.00.  Now that is close to an ICE vehicle that should get 350-400 miles to a 16 gallon tank, but still more. 16 gallons x $4.00 x 3 fill ups is only $190.00.  BUT, they don’t mention how long the trip took. I fast forwarded the video, appears it took one day for the first 3 charges as the 3rd charge was filmed at night. Then another 8-12 hours in a hotel and you can’t make that trip in less than 2 days. In an ICE vehicle you can make that 1200 miles at 70 mph in a little more than 17 hours. So I guess if you can waste 31 hours and spend similar money then go fo it. But let’s say it’s and emergency and you need to make that trip as fast as you can. The EV ain’t gonna do it. In my opinion the ICE vehicle still wins. 

Edit. I think the average $.40 per kWh is the on road standard charging cost. I have no data on cost of the rapid chargers.

Longest I've done is 13 hours with four fuel stops. I was 20 at the time and I could barely move the next day.

Hell we had to drive that to Oregon to be in court the next day then it was continued.

I dont favor a straight through 17 hour drive either. If we are going to do real world comparisons based on cost and performance then it needs to be factored. To me the travel is as much the trip as the destination, I’m a sucker for tourists traps and scenic lookouts. In the EV as they mentioned in the video, don’t stray from your calculated route. In an ICE you can pretty much count on gas stations. So again in a real life side by side, EV, stay on you dedicate route, ICE, go anywhere you want (within reason) plan on twice as long for the drive at almost the same cost. Again ICE is my choice. I don’t think 60k or more is a fair price for a golf cart to cruise the neighborhood. 

Will need chargers  at locations that offer food / shopping /entertainment /and all points of interest
Or  it won't work for me and the wife. .. I'm not going to sit at a charger  with no creature comforts.

Here is an interesting detail.  It's true that CARB has stated that by 2035 100% of cars sold in CA will need to be Zero-Emissions Vehicles (ZEV).  But what qualifies as a ZEV?

"The ZEV regulation is designed to achieve the state’s long-term emission reduction goals by requiring auto manufacturers to offer for sale specific numbers of the very cleanest cars available. These vehicle technologies include full battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles."

It turns out a plug-in hybrid is included in the list.  So it seems like a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq, Toyota Prius, or Kia Niro would all qualify as ZEV vehicles since they can and do run on battery only for short trips.  And they all have gas engines for longer trips.  And they all cost in the range of $25k, which is not the cheapest car be not crazy expensive like a Telsa or a "Limited" F150.

As I mentioned before, CARB set of goal of 10% of total sales for ZEV by 2003.  But when it became clear that wasn't feasible, they created the Partial ZEV (PZEV) classification.  This was even before the first hybrid vehicles hit the market.  Many PZEV vehicles were just regular gas cars that had very clean burning engines.  The original 1990 regulation was intended to reduce smog, and I guess a PZEV maybe produces near zero smog contributing chemicals, but it can still be a car that burns nothing but gas.

This update is certainly a big push away from gas-only cars, but CARB is clearly willing to revise targets based on what technology is available.

What is this saying Steve?  I really wish you would actually join in the conversation, say what you think, and support your viewpoint. 

What "problem doesn't exist"?  Does smog not exist?  Does air pollution not exist?  Do we not have a strategic and economic interest in being a world leader in battery and electronics technology?  Are you holding the plans for a Mr. Fusion , so you know that as long as we have enough banana peels and old High Life we can go anywhere we want?

Take a stand Steve.  Tell us how what you think with words instead of memes.  Explain to us all of the ways that EVs are a mistake.  Let's talk about it.
