i know that it's the stator because the mechanic that i took it to said it was weak and only putting out 11.8 when it should be putting out about 13.

Well, I hope he was a really good mechanic. Many mechanics wouldn't have a clue on your alternator. I'm not trying to bad-mouth your mechanic or anything, I'm just speaking from experience.

A stator test done properly won't usually come up with a number like 11.8. When you isolate the stator and test it, the output will be more like 100 volts. You achieve this by bypassing the regulator and open-ending the rectifier as Kit did in his thread. If you don't get the 75~100 volts, then you have to verify the field-coil by detecting the magnetism as Kit also did.

I just checked the 650 manual to get the actual numbers on the stator test, and it specifies "about 75V at 4000 rpm", loudhvx's statement that it should be 75-100V is right.

If you search the board, you will find regulator/rectifier and ignitor designs by loudhvx, he is a professional electronics guy, and an expert on these charging systems.

I argue with everyone, except loudhvx on electronics stuff :laugh: :laugh:

Btw, I checked the manual for charging system output at the battery for the KZ650.

Reading @ 4000 rpm. about 14.5V

If the reading is more than 16V, the regulator/rectifier is defective, and should be replaced with a new one.
If the reading is less than 14V, check the dynamo output and regulator/rectifier to determine which part is defective

That's right. The inner one was on the B and C models. I have an outer cover for sale in the classifieds " HERE " if you're interested. New/Old stock very good condition at quite a good price. I bought the wrong one :(

Here's a 77 stator. Like the other guys said more likely the regulator or rectifier is bad.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
