1977 kz650 stator

could somebody please post a picture of a '77 kz650 b1 stator or describe it to me.

also, does anyone know where i could get a replacement one? either oem or aftermarket.

I don't have one, but a manual should have a pic. Do you have a manual? If not, I could scan a pic for you.

I ended up getting mine off of ebay. I have a buddy who works at a shop here in Omaha, I'll check with him because I think he could get one, I just ended up getting a new old stock one on ebay dirt cheap. Let me check with him and I'll post an update.

somebody told me that there is 2 stators in a 1977 kawasaki kz650 b1, an inner one and an outer one. is that true?

From my buddy's store it'd be an aftermarket, refurbished (I think). The 77 kz650b1 (what I ride) has three pieces inside the stator cover, the stator yoke (which is what we're talking about in this thread) the field coil, and the rotor (which is just a machined cylinder that's magnetized). From what I've heard, usually when something in there isn't working right it's the stator yoke, not either of the other two pieces. It's a fairly complex system that I'm still working on getting debugged myself. The url below should take you to the thread that's helped me a great deal in trouble shooting this same issue in my 77. In the link Anarki650 posted, the problem was most likely the regulator. That is the weakest link in your charging system (which works in the exact same way as the KZ400 system). The regulator controls the intensity of the magnetism in the field-coil (called that because it creates a magnetic field). The rotor is not actually a magnet. It just alternates the poles of the field which gets picked up by the stator which uses this alternatinfg field to create electric current.

I imagine, over time, the rotor may itself get slightly magnetized permanently. The alternator's design is pretty ingenious. It works like a car alternator without the use of brushes or slip-rings to transfer electricity. It's more reliable than a car alternator because of that. I doubt many cars have original, working alternators from the mid to early 1970's. I believe I have yet to see an actual defective KZ stator (other than crash-damage).

The big weak spot is the old-fashioned mechanical relay. It loses calibration over time and can cause the power to the field coil to be weaker than necessary to produce the power the bike needs. That's why the regulator bypass test is so important in KitNYC's thread. If you follow it closely, you should get most of what you need to verify the stator, field coil, and rectifier operation.

I'm with loudhvx on this. It's most likely the regulater. I bought my 77 new and stator or field coil have never gone bad but I've replaced a few regulaters. If it was run too long with a bad regulater it could damage the rectifier. I've had to replace it too.
