I bought a non running 82 KZ 1000 a couple of years back as a project. I have done quite a bit to it, still doesn't run right. I did a valve job, and while the head was off, I decided to pull the jugs. Was going to have cylinders honed, but the machinist discovered scratches. Had cylinders bored .020. New pistons, of course. Put it all back together, set the valves, and it still doesn't want to run right. I'm about out of patience, and I refuse to spend any more money on it. I'm going to ask 1100.00 for it, not a third of what I have in it. It has new Delcevic pipes on it that cost half of what I'm asking for it. I believe the trouble lies in the carburetors.  I'm located in Rowlett, Tx. If anyone's interested, message me, and I will be more specific. Thanks for looking.

Hey there
I had the same problem on my kz 1000. I tried carbs, coils and spent countless hours trying to sort it out. It made me a better mechanic. It ran great when I was riding alone but if I was leaving a restaurant with people admiring my bike it would pop and spit and hardly run. Then one day I had the carbs off and decided to do a compression test. As I spun the my over I saw a spark jump from the plug wire into the primary side of the coil!!!
