Stuck tappet/bucket was created by Cfoux85
I have a 1982 kz750e 4cyl and i have a stuck tappet/bucket that i have tried letting it soak, tapping, suction, magnets, and nothing is working. It will compress but will not come back up unless i tap on the valve. Any suggestions or does anyone have a spare head that they wanna let go of that wouldn't cost me much or would be willing to trade for?

Before you get in too deep I would suggest removing the valve spring and seeing how easily the valve moves (sounds like it may be a bent valve rather than a bucket issue)

Heat around the bucket area with a propane torch then grab it with some channel locks (wrap the jaws with duct tape) twist and pull

Would i have to remove the bucket in order to get the spring out? When i tap the bucket down the valve sticks open and i can grab the valve with channel locks and turn the valve so it does move.

I had a stuck bucket when the head was on the engine, I got it removed with the method I suggested.

Yes you need to remove the bucket to be able to remove the valve and valve spring. If you have to wreck the bucket to get it removed you can always replace it, hopefully that does not happen. You have the head off the engine so it will probably be easier to heat and remove.

Try heating with the torch while applying a spray lube (WD40 etc) It takes a bit of time to heat the casting up, at least 5 mins while hitting it with lube a few times then try to twist it out. If it does not come out on the first try do it again till it moves.

Hardened steel. I used an aluminum rod to hit the tappets lightly making them bounce while using ATF/acetone mix to loosen them. On the stubborn ones I heated them up with my torch. It was a junk head that sat in the dirt for years. I got them all out, the vales and seats had just been done. I cleaned and ported the head that's what I'm running now. I agree it must be a bent valve if so the valve guide will be shot as well.

Oh great. This is the 2nd head that ive gotten thats no good. The last one had a broken valve guide and now this one. How hard is it to replace the guides?

Replacing guides isn't a complicated process but to be honest by the time you buy the tools (drifts and a reamer) and with the potential to "get it wrong" it would probably be cheaper in the long run to use a shop if you haven't done it before (ideally you would get the valve seat re-cut to the new guide also)

Good Morning! If You get in a pickle and find something not suitable with the (2?) heads in your possession let me know, I've got a spare LTD750 82-83 head down in the outbuilding taking-up space. Have had it for years but haven't really looked at for years either. Of course it's not black like the E model, natural color.
