Cam chain

Hello I got build a Hp engine and I sourced all the parts I did Purchased a DID cam chain that came in the APE packaging, I started the engine and put like 40 miles on to it riding it gentle as is breaking in and I took it for a ride on the high way, I was cruising at 6000 RPM and then suddenly died, got it hone open the valve cover and for my surprise the cam chain snapped, I started to look close to it and the chain kind of has a sideways play does seams like some sort of and quality metal like some sort of Chinese shite.
After so much money spent and buying parts and paying the labour I am back to square one with my bike,I have not ever been  able to enjoy since build, Now where can I get a heavy duty 122 links cam chain that is reliable?
As far I remember the chain came form APE direct so don't know what to think about all this, Has anyone had a bad experience with this APE sourced cam chains?

Very sorry to hear about this, especially since I just installed a master-link cam chain in my engine.  

I know nothing about D.I.D cam chain quality, but briefly considered purchasing one.  I thought they were made in Japan, but who can actually be sure these days.

Please post a couple good pictures of the cam chain where it broke.

Nothing wrong with DiD cam chains, or any DiD chains for that matter.  I'm not sure exactly what happened here. Get onto APE straight away and tell them what happened. 
When you say it broke, how and where exactly, its really unusual for even a cheap chain to break that quickly....
Some pictures of the chain would be good, close up pics of the chain side plates too.

Is it a roller chain, or a HyVo?
A photo of the broken ends would be great.

If it is an original DID chain, it says DID on the chain. I just changed my old one for a new heavy duty DID after about 100.000km. And then the old one was still not completely done. So original DID is ok.

That's why I asked for pics of the side plates..

Something very odd going on with that chain though.
Discolouration of that small section of chain and those strange blobs on those two pins.
I'd say a couple of links has been added to lengthen the chain to maybe fit a MK2 engine or it's been split and fitted after the bottom end has been assembled and someone hasn't had the correct tool to rivet so has tacked the pins with weld causing the discolouration which certainly looks heat related  (especially the blueish fade on the fourth link from the left at the top of the pic ) and weakened the chain which just happens to have failed on one of the "blobbed" pins... No coincidence ..
When you read the FB posts the guy who's complaining didn't do the work himself but handed all the parts to his "Mechanic" and we know how that story often goes !
I also think that both the FB post and this thread refer to the same chain. not two seperate incidents.  and that the fault lies with whoever bodged the chain and not APE's or DID's quality control or "Chinese shite".
I certainly won't be avoiding APE parts based on the incompetance of some back street knuckle dragger posing as a skilled engine builder and i would be taking my complaints to the engine builder himself and not the supplier of the parts..



 

I could be very wrong here, but it looks like the "DID" logo isn't in line with the pins. Could it be that this is a counterfeit chain? The riveting also looks less consistent than you might expect from a top quality manufacturer. This problem exists throughout manufacturing - I was caught out offshore with fake lifting shackles. Right branding, right box, but something felt slightly odd. We had one hardness tested; it was soft steel and could have failed.

I have access to a box of DID cam chains, most are hyvo but i'm sure there's some older style chains in there, won't be able to get there till next week though. I think Robs right, something fishy going on where that chain broke, If i'm not wrong, there's been 3 or 4 links added to that chain and that's where its failed, I'm voting dodgy mechanic as well....

I noticed the rainbow blue color. That only happens from heat. I also noticed the section of links that are different color. I was thinking maybe that heat discoloration happens post grenade. I thought the blobs were sludge. Now looking at it as Zed has I see the weld blobs which cause the heat color on the grafted in section of chain. I’m in agreement it appears to be a modified part which is not representative of APE or DID. 

Brand new out of the box DID cam chain.
