hey i have a 2005 kz1000 police bike. it has about 34k miles on it.
im doing a valve adjustment but when i turn the engine to the next position it seems like im jumping time. the chain goes slack then gets tight again. is this normal? is there a way to keep it from doing that?

Likely normal. Best to make sure your cam chain tensioner is working correctly.

It's normal .
On the later J type engines ( no kickstart) with the cam cover removed with it's intergral slipper tension this allows the cams to move independantly within the confines of the subsequent camchain slack under the pressure of the valve springs acting on the cam lobes.
With the cover fitted ( and the rear camchain tension refitted) the slack is removed and this cannot happen under running conditions.
The camchain cannot jump teeth on the crank as the main bearing cap is fitted with a " quieting bolt " which prevents the chain doing this.
Make sure when refitting the cam cover that the rear tensioner is removed first otherwise the camchain will be dangerously overtight which will lead to engine failure.
