Aluminum debris in oil was created by Koten4
Hey guys, so I changed my oil recently and found this at the bottom of the pan. Its the first time im seeing this and its kind of a mystery to me because the engine seems to be running fine and the transmission shifts fine as well. The bike is a KZ750N that has 8500mi and as far as I know has never been torn apart. All of the pieces seem to be aluminum and I am posting these hoping that someone may have an idea what it could possibly be. This is probably wishful thinking but I am hoping that it is something i can catch before it causes major engine damage. Thanks

I would make a best guess on the diameter of that curved piece, then go thru the diagrams at partzilla.
some parts are listed w the size. there are only x number of things it could be, so it shouldn't be too hard to narrow it down.
Clutch, gear change & transmission are a few you could check first.

The oil pan is recording the histroy of any engine life and condition.
An oil change didn´t really remove all sludge and debris.

It´s an easy task to remove and cleaning the oil pan and oil pump filter screen.

I was thinking trans lock ring. But I agree the bits of aluminum have to be case debris

Im curious  what violent  event  happened inside the  cases to cause this  fragmenting  , But is allowing  the motor to still be running and shifting properly.
???
Did it happen during  initial  break in and was just discovered???
Or was it the result of a trans malfunction  trying to push out a  shaft / gear or shift fork

I currently have the oil pan out of it, and it seems like everything was flushed out when I drained the oil. I will try to look around to see if I can spot anything obvious. Should I also remove the clutch cover while i am at it?

Only a teardown this winter will tell the tale

Shot in the dark, but maybe the debris is from the factory? I'm not positive but on my N1 engine it looks like the cases were painted before the surfaces were milled. The flakes in your oil look goldish, so I dunno. Hard to tell the size from a photo though.

Looks more like a piece of piston ring to me also,  the snap rings are all flat and not that big of diameter.   But again,  it shouldn't/couldn't be running properly with a piece of piston ring missing.  I think Steve's guess about a previous repair makes sense.  That piece of aluminum has been bouncing around for a while!
